CSU drops to 2-1
SPOKANE, WASH. – Colorado State's first road game of the season resulted in a 2-1 loss to Gonzaga Thursday evening at Luger Field to snap the program's best start.
The Bulldogs struck first and fast, scoring their first goal of the game in the fourth minute of play. Freshman Lauren Elwer snuck the ball into the back of the net and was assisted by another Bulldog freshman, Erin Healy.
The Bulldogs spent most of the night putting pressure on the Rams down at CSU's end of the field. Gonzaga had 11 shots on goal, where Colorado State only had three.
With nine minutes left of regulation, the Rams were able to tie it up with a straight shot just outside the penalty arc from sophomore Gracie Armstrong, her first of the season. It was assisted from Ally Murphy-Pauletto, notching her first points of the season.
Just as they scored early, the Bulldogs scored about as late as they could. The final goal to put Gonzaga up 2-1 was from a Bulldogs shot that deflected off a CSU defender with six seconds left.
Colorado State fell to 2-1 overall, while Gonzaga upped its record to 2-1.
Head coach Bill Hempen did not join the team for the two-game road swing as he tends to a personal health matter. The program looks forward to Hempen's speedy return to the sidelines.
It is not a long travel day Friday or Saturday for the Rams as they will battle the Eagles of Eastern Washington on Sunday in Cheney, Washington, located about 16.5 miles southwest of Spokane.
