Rams make gains in second fall tournament
LARAMIE, Wyo. – Priscilla Palermo made Sunday's finals in both singles and doubles at the Wyoming Open, falling short on both counts as Colorado State's women's tennis team made a bit of a jump forward from the weekend prior.
Palermo dropped a 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 decision to Central Oklahoma's Isabelle Dunlap in the Flight A final, a matchup which covered more than three hours. She picked up the trip by winning a coin flip with teammate Emily Luetschwager in the semifinals, as CSU head coach Jarod Camerota said it wasn't worth it to have a Ram showdown in a tourney. Luetschwager won every other match she played.
Palermo later teamed up with Alyssa Grijalva to reach the Flight A finals in doubles, where they fell 8-3 to Ida Krause and Clara Mansart of Wyoming.
In the Flight B doubles final, CSU's Riley Reeves paired up with Montana State's Enni Zander, falling to Ana Fernandez and Ana Ryo of Wyoming, 8-2.
"We played better than last weekend," Camerota said. "We worked on some new things. It's still early, and we will still get a lot better."
The Rams picked up some wins in the back brackets on Sunday, as Anastasiia Kotsyuba, who lost in the A semis, beat Zander 6-1, 6-4. Stella Cliffe won a back-draw match in the A flight, while Reeves lost her bid in the bracket.
In B singles, Emma Corwin won in straight sets. In A doubles, Cliffe and Luetschwager picked up a victory, with Corwin and Kotsyuba falling in the B flight.
Colorado State will be back on the court Saturday and Sunday as the Rams host the fourth annual Jon Messick Invitational at the CSU Outdoor Tennis Complex. Play begins both days at 10 a.m.
