Stevens Hits the Game Winner As Rams Rally For Heart-Stopping 92-91 Win Over Nevada

1/29/2020 11:25:00 PM | Men's Basketball

CSU shoots 62 percent in the second half and comes back from 10 down late in the second half to take the victory

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – In an instant classic, freshman Isaiah Stevens 19-foot jumper as time expired lifted Colorado State to a thrilling 92-91 victory over visiting Nevada Wednesday night in Moby Arena. With its sixth win in the last seven conference games, the Rams improved to 15-8 and 6-4 in the Mountain West, while the Wolf Pack dropped to 13-9 and also 6-4 in the league.

After a back-and-forth first 30 minutes of the contest, Nevada put on a run to take a 10-point lead with 7:52 to play in the contest. However as they have done throughout the season, the Rams fought back, tying the game at 85 with 1:04 to play.

A stop and a David Roddy basket followed by two Roddy free throws on the ensuing possession put CSU up four. Nevada came back with a three pointer to make it a one-point game. A split of free throws by Stevens got it back to two, but Jalen Harris drained a three with 5.3 seconds to play to put the visitors up one, setting up the dramatic finish. After CSU's timeout, the ball was inbounded to Stevens, who drove the length of the court, pulled up into a small space inside the three-point line and connected on the winner.

Colorado State finished at 53.6 percent (30-of-56) from the floor and 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from the arc. Nevada was also solid in this offensive shootout, shooting 52.2 percent (35-of-67) and 48.3 percent (14-of-29) on threes. A major difference was the charity stripe, as the Rams were 23-of-30 (76.7 percent) to Nevada's 7-of-9 (77.8 percent). CSU won the boards, 33-31, and outscored Nevada 13-9 in points off turnovers.

The Rams were led by sophomore Adam Thistlewood with a career-high 24 points, 22 coming in the second half, including hitting all seven of his free throw attempts and going 7-of-10 from the floor. Freshman David Roddy added 18 points, while redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho added 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore Kendle Moore and Stevens rounded out the double-figure scorers for CSU with 14 and 12, respectively. Nevada's Harris led all scorers with a career-high tying 31 points.

STAT OF THE GAME
• The Rams were an impressive 16-of-26 (61.5 percent) from the field and 16-of-18 (88.9 percent) on free throws in the second half.

NOTES
  • The two teams split the season series. Nevada still leads the overall series 15-10, but the CSU win snapped an eight-game skid against the Wolf Pack. The last previous CSU win was Feb. 6, 2016, a 76-67 victory in Moby Arena.
  • This was the first time in four opportunities that CSU has won this year in Mountain West play after trailing at the break
  • This marked Stevens' second game winner of the season in the final 10 seconds (Loyola Chicago)
  • Carvacho is tied for first with Jordan Caroline of Nevada for career double-doubles by a league player with 44, recording his ninth double-double of the year tonight.
  • Carvacho is now the 10th all-time CSU scoring leader with 1,283 points, passing Jason Smith, a 13-year NBA veteran who recently retired, at 1,281.
  • With the win, the Rams secured at least a .500 home record with four games to play. That is the ninth time in 10 years that CSU has accomplished the feat.

NEXT UP
• The Rams will stay at home to take on UNLV for the annual Orange Out game on Saturday, Feb. 1.
• The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 at 2 p.m. MT.
• The audio will be on the Colorado State Sports Radio Network (along with online at CSURams.com), with Brian Roth and Adam Nigon on the call.
• CSU Sports Network broadcasts can be also accessed on mobile devices through the TuneIn app (free on all Apple, Android, Windows, Blackberry and Amazon Kindle devices) – once downloaded, search "Colorado St. Rams Sports Network" in the app for the games and coaches' show broadcasts.
