Colorado State Travels to San Jose State for a Saturday at 2 p.m. PT tip.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After obtaining redemption Wednesday against UNLV, the Colorado State women's basketball team aims to get it again at San Jose State on Saturday with a 2 p.m. PT tip inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
Heading into Mountain West's last weekend of games, the Rams (12-14, 6-9 MW) are coming off a win that split the series against UNLV, while the Spartans (15-11, 9-6) are trying to get out of a five-game losing streak.
In game one of the season series on Jan. 11, the Spartans used a strong second half to erase a halftime deficit and squeak out a 58-53 win inside Moby Arena. The game was knotted up with 3:10 to go and was even a one-point SJSU lead with 25 seconds left, but SJSU's Ayzhiana Basallo sealed it at the free throw line en route to her game-high 27 points. The loss put a damper on Andrea Brady's herculean 23-rebound effort that set a CSU record in addition to a 20-point game from Makenzie Ellis.
The all-time series between the two schools belongs to CSU to a tone of 16-5 despite the early season loss and the Rams have not lost in San Jose since 2014 – a four-game win streak.
Mountain West Outlook
Within the Mountain West standings, CSU currently stands in eighth, two games back from fifth place, with three remaining games before the conference tournament at the start of March. The Rams look for a series sweep at Air Force a split in the other two versus San Diego State and San Jose State.
Off The Tip
• Last time out, the Rams got redemption against UNLV with a 60-56 win to even the season series since the Lady Rebels took game one. It seemed like it was going to be another close lose for the Rams when they were down seven with 3:30 to play, but 11 unanswered points flipped that script to CSU's favor. Six of Lore Devos' eight fourth quarter points occurred in the final stretch to add to her season-high 18 points. Also helping seal the deal was Tori Williams' fifth 3-pointer, which tied a career-high en route to her 15 points that broke her spell of four games without double-digit scoring.
• During conference play, Andrea Brady and Makenzie Ellis have been the Rams' stalwarts. Ellis has 10 double-digit scoring games in MW play and has poured in 164 (12.6 ppg) points in the 13 games after the pre-holiday MW games. Brady has compiled 112 rebounds (7.5 rpg) with 107 points (7.1 ppg) in conference play with highs of 23 points against Boise State and a school record 23 rebounds against San Jose State, which also stands third in NCAA DI this season.
• Defense continues to be the Rams' specialty. Fifteen times this season CSU, the MW second-best scoring defense (59.6 ppg), has held an opponent to 60 points or less. Seven times it has been below 50 points - a feat not replicated in the MW. Seventeen times this season, CSU held its opponent to under 10 points in a quarter including four times it has been under five points.
• Ball control continues to be a strength for the Rams. CSU has had equal or less turnovers than its opponent in all but five games (UIW, BSU, NM, AFA, at NEV), ranking first in the Mountain West in turnovers per game (10.8), which checks in second nationally. The turnover margin (+4.35) is second in the MW and 37th in the NCAA. In all but seven games (SDSU, BSU, TUL, NM, UNLV, FS, UNLV), the Rams have scored more points off of the turnovers than its counterpart.
• Redshirt-senior forward Andrea Brady has pulled in a team-high 218 rebounds, which ranks fifth in the Mountain West and 76th in the NCAA. Average-wise that pans out to 8.4 a game for fourth in the conference and 106th nationally. She has five double-digit board games with a high of 23 and has had at least six in all but four games. She is on pace for 251 rebounds which would put her in CSU's all-time top-10 single-season record list.
