Five Top-20 Marks Highlight Season Opener
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Eleven months since competing last did not affect the Colorado State track and field teams as personal records and school marks were bountiful in day one of the Air Force Invitational Friday inside the Cadet Field House.
In total, 10 personal records were produced including five new top-20 school marks – two of which came from CSU debuts.
After redshirting last indoor season, Ashton Hallsted put on the green and gold for the first time and turned out the fifth-best mark in school history in the weight throw at 66'1.5'' for second place. Also in the throwing ring but on the men's side, Mariano Kis tossed it 62'8.75'' – over a 3-foot improvement in his PR – to land at No. 20 all-time in the men's weight throw.
On the track, the biggest improvement occurred in the 60-meter hurdles with Liam Mather clocking 8.11 seconds – a 0.59 upgrade on his previous best – which also registered as the second-best mark heading into Saturday's finals. In the 200m, Kelley Stephens upped his PR .46 seconds to 21.79, which slides him into a tie for 16th in school history. Stephens will be toeing the starting blocks Saturday in the finals as well.
Lastly in an impressive debut, freshman Janyah Jasper crossed the 60m at 7.57 – good for a share of 10th all-time at CSU. She paired her sixth-place 60m with an eighth-place 200m placing, earning an advancement into the finals in both as the top Ram.
Fifteen total Rams made their debut Friday night whether it was true freshmen or transfers. Ten advanced to their event's Saturday final and four placed in their event that concluded today.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Brian Bedard
On Day One…
"I think today proved our student-athletes have a championship mentality. They have not stepped onto a track to compete in 11 months and we had PR's or near PR's in all event areas. They have not skipped a beat. The newbies were clearly rusty and had that "deer in the headlights look", but that is okay, because now they have a meet under their belt. Our returners showed leadership and experience. They aren't messing around and are leading the way."
Assistant Coach J.J. Riese
On Day One…
"Sprints, hurdles and jumps performed better than I expected. It was good to compete after 11 months off. The group was excited and had great energy. The competition revealed some areas we need to address as well, but overall, I'm impressed with how we came out today."
