Rams Track & Field and Cross Country Cruise Up and Down I-25

Split Team but Same Results as Rams Impress in Opening Meets
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo./CHEYENNE, Wyo. – A hundred and sixty-five miles along I-25 separated the Rams Saturday between the track and field teams at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs and the cross country teams up in Cheyenne, Wyo., however the positive results were not far apart.
Â
Cross Country – Wyoming Dual
The cross country teams traveled the shorter of the two trips with a 53-mile northbound trek up I-25 to the North Cheyenne Community Park. The 1,000-feet elevation gain paired with the low 30-degree temperatures and snow flurries produced a chilly start to the season for the Rams, but if it affected the Rams it did not show as they were in mid-season form.
Â
Rams dominated both races by putting eight runners in front of Wyoming's second finisher. On the women's side, Lily Tomasula-Martin won the 6,000-meter race with a time of 21:17.5 with Lauren Offerman and Sarah Carter on her heels in second and third place.
Â
To lead the No. 21-ranked men's team, Thomas Chaston was the first uniformed runner to cross at 18:10.2 with Tanner Norman behind at 18:15.6. Jacob Brueckman rounded out the top five after Wyoming's top finisher.
Â
"The men and women ran equally impressive races," coach Art Siemers said. "After such a long layoff you expect there to be some rust but we executed nearly perfect races. The biggest improvement over our last cross country season is in the depth of our top 8-9 runners. Today's performance shows the hard work the team put in over the last year. We are in a position for both the men's and women's teams to merit national rankings in the coming weeks."
Â
A mountain bike manned by Wyoming assistant coach and former Ram student-athlete Nick Costello served as the "lead bike", however All-American Eric Hamer, running unattached, was about two strides and a leap to having a much easier ride. Hamer out of cross country eligibility still has an outdoor season left in his collegiate career.
Â
Air Force Invitational
Â
After Friday saw five new top-20 school marks, Saturday added two more. Additionally, the Rams won four events and had seven top-3 finishes.
Â
A day after entering the men's weight throw school top-20 list, Mariano Kis moved into the 18th spot on the shot put list as well, throwing a 56'11.50'' for first place. It was an improvement of 1'7.75'' from his previous personal best.
Â
In the 60-meter hurdles, Liam Mather and Kamal-Craig Golaube finished 1-2 at 8.09 and 8.16, respectively. Mather's time bested his result from yesterday which inches him up to tied for 14th in school history.
Â
Allam Bushara in the triple jump represented the other men's first-place finisher, while Tom Willems notched a runner-up performance in the 400m.
Â
On the women's side, Lauren Gale highlighted the bunch with a win in the 400m. The mile relay of Grace Goldsworthy, Yolonda Johnson, Makayla Williams, and Jasmine Chesson took second with a time of 3:53.89.
Â
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Brian Bedard
On Day Two…
"We had some good performances again and we could have had some more but to be cautious, we held a few student-athletes out that had some nagging injuries. However, for the most part we feel very good about where we are at team-wise and are impressed by some individuals despite it being just the first meet. The results down here coupled with what the cross country team did up in Cheyenne made for a good weekend for the Rams and the program."
Â
Assistant Coach J.J. Riese
On Day Two…
"Another solid day, which for day two of an invitational is an important rehearsal for the conference championship. Many athletes near or at PR levels."
