Rams Drop Contest Against Aggies, 2-1

Colorado State Loses First of Two Road Games this Week

MILLVILLE, Utah – The chances were there all game, but the execution wasn't for Colorado State soccer, which lost to Utah State, 2-1, Thursday afternoon.

Despite outshooting the Aggies in total shots (15-11) and shots on goal (8-5), the attempts didn't equate to more goals for the Rams. Opportunities were plenty too given CSU's seven corner kicks to USU's three. The loss put CSU at 6-6-2 overall and 5-4 in the Mountain West, while USU improved to 11-4-3 overall and 4-3-2 in conference play.

"More possession and more shots don't mean much if the goals don't follow," head coach Keeley Hagen said. "Credit to Utah State for keeping the ball out of the back of the net and playing well defensively, while also executing on the offensive end. We need to get better in both boxes. This certainly is a step back, but we must regroup for Sunday and just be better across the board. We need to eliminate these short free kicks that we keep letting teams get, improve on first and second balls in addition to getting better individually so the team can as well."

The Aggies scored first in the 15th minute and carried that 1-0 lead into the half although the Rams peppered nine shots – four of which were on goal.

In the second half, a well-placed goal by USU senior Ashley Cardozo off a free kick put the Aggies up 2-0 at the 62nd minute mark. However, the Rams answered just six minutes later when Gracie Armstrong scored her sixth goal of the season and 11th all-time at CSU, which ties her third in the record book with former teammate Taylor Steinke.

With life back in the Rams and their bench, it was then a fight for an equalizer, but it never came as the Aggie defense limited the Rams' chances from there on out.

The one-goal loss marked the fourth of the season and third in conference play.

Goals
15' Sara Taylor – Utah State (Assist – Kylie Olsen)
Sophomore Kylie Olsen played the ball into the box to Sara Taylor who snuck in between two CSU defenders and got a clean look into the bottom left part of the net beyond a diving Shayna Ross.

62' Ashley Cardozo – Utah State (Unassisted)
After a Ram foul, the Aggies had a free kick from 14 yards out. USU senior Ashley Cardozo fired it over the four-Ram wall and placed it methodically in the top right part of the net on near post past a diving Ross again.

68' Gracie Armstrong – Colorado State (Assist – Liv Layton)
On the defensive side of the field, Liv Layton stole the ball at the 20-yard line on the far side of the field and sent it up to Gracie Armstrong at about midfield. The senior forward collected it and dribbled up to the 21-yardline – still  on the far side  – before hitting a rocket that sailed over the keeper and into the top-left back corner.
