Rams’ Win Streak Ends at New Mexico

Colorado State struggled from the service line recording 16 errors to one ace.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After posting a 27-3 set record during its past seven-match win streak, Colorado State suffered a 3-1 loss at New Mexico on Saturday afternoon, which snapped its streak and resulted in the Rams' first loss in Albuquerque since 2012.
Colorado State recorded 44 aces during its seven-match streak. Saturday afternoon the Rams had just one, while sending 16 errors to the scoresheet – tying the season high from last week's match at San Diego State.
Kennedy Stanford led the Rams' offense with 16 kills, while hitting .233. Sasha Colombo followed with double-figures with 10 kills and hitting a team-high .474, while also adding four blocks. Ciera Pritchard recorded her sixth double-double of the season, dishing out 37 assists and 11 digs. Alexa Roumeliotis led the backrow with 17 digs. Colorado State finish hitting .161 in the four-set match, while New Mexico was at .250.
The match had more scoring runs than most this season. New Mexico put together 12 scoring runs of three-or-more points, while Colorado State had just five, with four of those coming in the third set.
New Mexico started the match making three scoring runs in the first. The Lobos took the early at 7-1 and cruised to a 25-16 win, extended their lead to 22-13 at one point. The second brought more scoring run, this time for Colorado State as it made a 6-0 run early to lead 6-2. The Lobos responded with a 4-0 run to get within one and later used a 3-0 tear to take an 18-13 lead. From there both teams traded points as the Rams went down 2-0 in the match.
The third looked the best for Colorado State. The Rams did not hit the best, but they did record a match-high 14 kills and just three service errors compared to the 10 in the first two frames. CSU used a match-high four scoring run to avoid the sweep and take the set 25-22. New Mexico led the set at 16-12 before the Rams manufactured a 4-0 run to tie the frame at 16-16. From there, Colorado State handled the Lobos, keeping them to just three points down the stretch and using a pair of 3-0 runs.
UNM used a 4-0 run in the beginning of the fourth frame to lead 7-5 and from there, kept control. The Lobos used four different scoring runs to cruise to a 25-14 set and match victory.
Colorado State will return home and host Nevada and San Jose State in Moby Arena. The Rams face the Wolf Pack on Thursday at 7 p.m., MT on the Mountain West Network.
