Rams Can’t Complete Sweep at Wyoming

Colorado State took the first two sets before dropping the final three to suffer the loss.
LARAMIE, Wyo. – Colorado State took an early lead in the second edition of the Border War of the season and looked to sweep Wyoming, but suffered the loss on Tuesday night dropping the last three sets (25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 9-15). The Rams drop to 16-8 overall and 12-3 in the conference – all three conference losses happening on the road.
Head Coach Tom Hilbert was absent for the match due to entering COVID-19 protocols. Associate Head Coach Emily Kohan assumed head coaching in his absent.
The first set primed the match as there were a match-high 18 tie scores and 10 lead changes during the 47 points scored. Neither team led by more than two points from start to end – Colorado State held the biggest lead at 10-8 after a 3-0 run. Wyoming held a 23-22 advantage late in the set, but CSU capped the frame with back-to-back points. Kennedy Stanford started her night with six kills in 12 swings for a .417 in the first, with the Rams hitting .353 and putting up three blocks – led by Karina Leber with three.
Both teams started the second by training points before Colorado State manufactured a 5-0 run to lead 9-5 and one they wouldn't lose. Wyoming got within one a few times down the stretch, but the Rams continue to string points together to keep their lead and take a 2-0 match lead. Karina Leber paced CSU in the second with four kills and the team hit .258.
Colorado State looked to make quick work away from Moby Arena, jumping out to a 9-6 lead in the third after a 6-0 tear, but Wyoming stormed back with a 7-0 run to lead 18-14. From then, the Cowgirls outscored the Rams 7-4 to avoid the sweep and begin the comeback. CSU hit a match-low .118 in the frame and just 12 kills with eight errors.
The fourth was arguably the tightest of the match. Both teams traded points to start, but a 4-0 run by the Cowgirls gave them a cushion and they kept it as both teams traded teams the rest of the way. The set was tied 23-23 before back-to-back kills by Wyoming evened the match a 2-2. There were 17 tie scores in the frame and five lead changes. The Rams hit a match-high .405 and both Kennedy Stanford and Maddy McCormick floored five kills each.
The final frame was tied 6-6 and Wyoming led at by one at 8-7 before keeping Colorado State scattered the rest of the way. From that point, the Cowgirls went on a 7-2 run to spoil the Rams' night.
Colorado State had three Rams reach double-figure kills with Kennedy Stanford (18), Annie Sullivan (17) and Karina Leber (13). The Rams finished hitting .293, led by Leber at .391, and keeping Wyoming behind them at .287. CSU also dropped in six aces – two in each of the first three sets. Ciera Pritchard dished out 53 assists and added 18 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Alexa Roumeliotis reached 20 digs and helped with six assists. Leber controlled the net with a match-high six blocks.
Colorado State will return to Moby Arena this weekend, hosting Fresno State in the final home match of the season at noon. The Rams will honor their two seniors, Alyssa Bert and Alexa Roumeliotis, prior to the first serve and fans are encouraged to wear Green.
