Colorado State Collects Eight Top-20 Marks in Season Opener
USAFA, Colo. – Day one of any track season will yield mixed results, but the Colorado State women were in midseason form Friday evening at the Air Force Holiday Open, collecting eight top-20 all-time CSU mark.
Â
The brightest performance is one the coaches are the happiest to see. School record holder in the 200m, Jessica Ozoude, who has missed the last season and a half due to injury, shined in the 60-meter dash. She crossed in first place with a time of 7.37, shaving .06 off her PR to move from sixth to fourth all-time at CSU. Behind her in second was sophomore Janyah Jasper with a 7.46 time – good for eighth on that same list for a one-spot advancement. Fellow sophomore Makayla Williams made her debut on the list for 15th after placing fifth at 7.66.
Â
The vaulting duo of Tameryn Coryell and Celyn Stermer went 1-2 with Coryell notching the fourth-best height in school history at 12'11.5''.
Â
Picking up where they left off last season, the women in the throwing events placed in five of the six spots between the weight throw and shot put. Gabi McDonald won the latter with a PR that improved her 10th-place spot in the record book. After a Tarynn Sieg second place, North Dakota transfer Michaela Hawkins completed the shot put sweep with a throw of 47'9.25'' – good for 15th in history.
Â
At 60-meter hurdles, Lexie Keller made her entrance on the all-time list with a share of 11th at 8.67, while freshman Jahzara Davis clocked an 8.81 60-meter hurdle race for a share of 16th all-time.
Â
In all 15 (7 women, 8 men) total first Ram appearances occurred Friday. The women tallied 11 personal records, while the men collected six PRs.
Coaches' Corner
Head Coach Brian BedardÂ
On the team's performance...
"I think both teams got off to good start. We weren't at full strength as we left some student-athletes at home for injury precautions and we didn't want to force anything during the season opener. But for the first meet, I'm pretty impressed on how the team competed and on some of the big performances we had. Overall, the team vibe was upbeat and brought good energy for themselves and their teammates. It felt like a normal indoor track meet after last year's shortened season and manuevering through COVID protocols."Â
