Rams Drop Four Three-Setters in Loss
2/19/2021 6:10:00 PM | Women's Tennis
DES MOINES, Iowa – Despite pushing four singles matches to the brink, Colorado State's women's tennis team couldn't find the closing punch in any of them, falling on the road to Drake, 7-0.
Â
The Rams are now 1-1 on the year and hit the courts immediately, facing South Dakota (10 a.m. MT) in a neutral-site match at Drake's facilities.
Â
"I liked the energy, and I thought people were competing alright," coach Jarod Camerota said. "We just didn't play that well. I told them this is just the second of 18 matches this year, so we have a ways to go."
Â
The No. 2 doubles team of Alyssa Grijalva and Lou Regen were off the courts first with a 6-2 win, but the Bulldogs took the other two slots for the team point. The win did give Grijalva 58 doubles victories in her career, good for tied at fourth place all-time in program history; and 30 dual doubles victories, tying her for 10th in the CSU record book.
Â
In singles, Lou Regen (No. 2), Tracy Guo (No. 3) and Anastasiia Kotsyuba (No. 6) won the opening set, only to drop the next two. At No. 5, Emma Corwin won the second set to force a third, where she dropped that decision.
Â
"Usually when you play three-setters, you tend to split them with the other team, but that didn't happen today," Camerota said. "I think it's the second match of the year, and being in those situations helps. Playing high percentage in those third sets is always key, and maybe we didn't always play the high-percentage shot. They were good battles. The No. 2 doubles team played well.
Â
Camerota believes relying on high-percentage play should be the goal for all of the Rams when they face South Dakota, and he expects the doubles teams to continue to bond and play better the more they are on the court.
