Rams Take Mountain West Opening Series at New Mexico

Colorado State fought hard, coming back three times, to take the series against New Mexico.

New Mexico scored the first runs of the game in the first inning after a 3-hit, 3-run frame, which included a home run and an error by the Rams gave it a 3-0 lead. Colorado State responded in the second as Corina Gamboa hit a three-run homer to right to tie the game. The Lobos retook the lead in the home half of the frame and added to their lead in the third inning after another home run, this time a two-run to lead 6-3. CSU did not quit as it tied the game after Gamboa hit her second homer of the game in the four – a single home run – before the Rams scored two more runs with two outs to tie the game 6-6. Both teams made quick work in the fifth and sixth frames to arrive at the seventh still tied. Colorado State took the lead after a double by Danielle Serna scored a run and added an insurance run on an RBI single by Gamboa to lead with three outs to go. The Lobos loaded the bases with three walks, but a strikeout from Serna eventually ended the game to secure the victory.

Corina Gamboa led the Rams offense with two home runs, three hits and five RBI. Danielle Serna also added to the offense with a pair of hits, including a double. The pair combined to score four runs – a pair each. Peyton Allen and Haley Donaldson also helped push runs across, each recording an RBI. Jessica Jarecki started in the circle, throwing the first three frames, allowing five earned runs before Danielle Serna came in on relief. Serna finished the game and earned the win (3-2) after four frames with just one hit and two strikeouts.
