Rams Split Doubleheader at Weber State

Colorado State’s offense was quiet in the first game but exploded in the second with a season-high 12 runs.
OGDEN, Utah – The Colorado State softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Weber State on Saturday afternoon. The Rams added the doubleheader with the Wildcats earlier in the week. CSU totaled just four hits in first game, but found its rhythm in the second, exploding for 13 hits and 12 runs.

GAME ONE | Box Score
The game started as a pitchers dual as a combined three hits were recorded in the first three frames. The Rams got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning after an RBI infield single by Corina Gamboa pushed Peyton Allen across home. Weber State responded in the home half of the inning with a pair of runs to take the lead. The Wildcats add to their lead in the fifth after three hits turned into two more runs. Colorado State's bats went cold the last two innings, as it did not register a hit.

Colorado State recorded four hits, each by different players. Corina Gamboa earned the lone RBI and Ashley Michelena knocked a double. Ashley York and Gamboa also each swiped a base. Taylor Gilmore made the start and was given the loss after five frames and four earned runs and struck out six batters. Danielle Serna made an appearance, hurling the final inning and recording a strikeout.

The Rams started the game with a six-hit, five-run inning as they recorded three doubles to take a 5-0 lead. Both teams scored a run the third as CSU continued to lead 6-1. Colorado State put the game out of reach in the fifth inning as it scored six runs on four hits. The Rams used timely singles and walks to push three runs across before Petyon Allen hit a three-run homer to give CSU a 12-1 lead. The Wildcats scored a run in the bottom half of the inning but nothing more as Colorado State secured the doubleheader split.

Maya Matsubara led the Rams with a 3-for-3 plate performance, including scoring two runs. Four other Rams tallied multiple hits, including Peyton Allen who added three RBI and scored two runs. Both Haley Donaldson and Tara Shadowen helped the offense with two RBI apiece. Julia Cabral earned the win after the five-inning game, allowing one earned run and striking out six batters.
