Rams and Tigers Tie in Double Overtime

Gracie Armstrong’s Corner Kick Goal Forces Tie with Colorado College

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – A happy accident and some help from a cameraman.

That's what junior forward Gracie Armstrong attributed to her goal in the double-overtime tie contest on Sunday.

Following a victory against Air Force on Friday, the Rams had another big game on their plate with Colorado College presenting another in-state rival.

Similar to the game against the Falcons, the group started off the first frame without a goal.

The first half of the game had Colorado State battling defensively. The Tigers took eight shots on the goal, while the Rams tallied only one. The team struggled to get anything going on the attack, which opened door for the guests to push in front.

At the 35-minute mark, the Tigers took the lead on a goal by Camille Weaver. About 16 minutes into the second half, Colorado State's junior forward Gracie Armstrong said a loss was not on the agenda and kicked one into the net.

"Honestly I didn't mean to do that," Armstrong said. "I do remember one of the cameramen in Canvas Stadium and he was like 'try to curl it in, try to curl it in,' and I think that honestly was in the back of my head and when it went in, I was like 'holy crap I can't believe I just did that.' It was an accident, but I was honestly so happy."

The Rams (2-1-1) closed out the game with a 1-all tie in double overtime. Coach Bill Hempen was content to tie the Tigers (4-1-1) as the Rams have never beaten them.

Additionally, Hempen is often reminded most of his lineup consists of underclassmen. After losing the fall season to COVID-19 and with only four games in the books, Hempen's expectations for the youngsters have to be adjusted.

He is happy to see how his team is developing.

"I really have watched them grow and understand the competitiveness of the college game and how every little tackle and every quality pass can affect the game one way or the other," Hempen said. "I told Amelia Hammerle that is by far the best command of the position this season."

The freshman goalkeeper put up her best numbers yet. Against the Tigers, Hammerle saved eight shots, allowing just the lone goal.

Her promising performance is joined by Armstrong, who has big shoes to fill. Against Colorado College, she accumulated four shots, a shot on the goal, and added another goal to her collection, totaling three for the season. Hempen is expecting a lot from the junior, as he expects her to fill soccer alum Caeley "KK" Lordemann's spot on the field.

"I put a lot on her," Hempen said. "I try to encourage her to go get the game. I guess it's a lot like basketball, you want one person in charge, and that's what I want from her. She's slowly but surely growing into that role. She was a winger a year ago and KK was in the middle of the park, and KK's personality dictated our team and Gracie could be on the perimeter. I'm shoving her in the middle. It's yours now, let's do something with it."

Lordemann left behind quite the legacy. During her last season, she put 11 goals up on the board. She also went on to play professionally across the ocean in Spain.

Armstrong stepped up to the challenge and had a strong outing on the field Sunday. She is leaning into her new leadership role with some guidance from coach. Her knowledge of the game is the reason Hempen is so passionate about her taking on such an important task on the field.

Looking forward, the program is going to work on following through on the opportunities they're given offensively and turn an opponent's weaknesses into goals.

"I think we just need to finish our chances," Armstrong said. "We've had a lot of opportunities and it's all about the opportunities that we finish, and the stats are showing that we just haven't been able to do that yet. But we're getting there, slowly but surely."

Next, the Rams continue their homestand and celebrate the seniors against Wyoming on Saturday, April 3rd.
