Colorado State Soccer Concludes Season on the Road

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – Due to COVID-19 complications that wiped out its first three away games, the Colorado State soccer team will make its 2021 spring season debut outside either Canvas Stadium or the CSU Soccer Field when they play at Utah State Friday and at New Mexico on Sunday.

The weekend also concludes play for the shortened season that will end with seven total games – four of which against the same opponent. The Rams (2-2-1) will play the Aggies and the Lobos each for a second time with CSU earning a split the first go around during the season-opening weekend. The Friday kickoff with the Aggies (3-4-1) is set for 3 p.m. MT, while the match up with the Mountain Division Champion Lobos (7-1) will be 1 p.m. MT.

"We don't see this [playing teams twice in a season] often," head coach Bill Hempen said. "We did see it in 2019 when we played Marquette home and away. It is a unique scenario that we have chosen to be in as a conference. It is always going to be what are your opponents going to take away from game one and adjust versus what we adjust. It will be a completely different chess match displayed as opposed to the first time when we each went in unaware of each other with no recent film and relying on 16-month-old game film. It will be exciting just the same though if not more for the coaches and players, because we know more about each other."

On the final weekend…
"As far as individual players are concerned, there is plenty to play for, so there are still impressions to be left. Team-wise, we want to make it a memorable last trip for the seniors and do our best like always to leave it all out on the field. We want to leave the season with a good taste in our mouths in what was a long and challenging year that started back in August."

Series History
- CSU and USU are knotted at 4-4 in the all-time series after the Rams defeated the Aggies earlier this season for the fourth-straight in the series. CSU is 3-2 at home and 1-2 when playing in Logan, Utah. About a month ago, the Rams used two second-half goals to complete the 2-1 comeback win. First, Steinke equalized it with a penalty kick in the 72nd minute and then Armstrong connected on the game winner in the 82nd minute.

- CSU trails the all-time series with New Mexico, 1-7 and is 0-3 when playing in Albuquerque. The Lobos defeated the Rams 4-1 in the season opener in Fort Collins. Armstrong had the first goal of the game from a Liv Layton assist in the 21st minute.

Colorado State Notes
- Gracie Armstrong's six points this season has her up to No. 3 on CSU's all-time career points list. She now has five career goals, which is tied sixth all-time.

- Taylor Steinke now stands second in career goals (10) and career points (23), trailing Caeley Lordemann in both. With her game-winning score against Air Force, she now has four which also is No. 2 behind Lordemann.

- Freshman goalkeeper Amelia Hammerle had a season-best eight saves in the 1-1 double overtime tie against Colorado College. She notched her first career shutout versus Air Force.

Utah State Notes
- Last time out, the Aggies tied Colorado College 1-1 and defeated Air Force 2-0. Utah State has scored 11 goals in the year coming from seven different Aggies.

- In the preseason poll, the Aggies were selected No. 10 out of the 12-team Mountain West.

New Mexico Notes
- Seven different Lobos have found the net with four doing so multiple times.

- New Mexico clinched the Mountain Division with their 1-0 win against Colorado College last weekend, which was their sixth shutout of the year. The Lobos were projected No. 3 in the Mountain West and to win the Mountain Division.
