LOGAN, Utah  – Defense yields second-half goal, leading to the Colorado State soccer team settling for a season split with Utah State after a 2-1 loss Friday afternoon at the Chuck & Gloria Bell Soccer Field.  Â
Â
The Aggies obtained redemption against the Rams after CSU defeated USU, 2-1, in the second game of the season at Canvas Stadium back on March 7th.
Â
Colorado State dropped to 2-3-1 overall on the season, while the Aggies win their second game in a row, moving to 4-4-1 overall. The USU victory also broke the Rams' streak of four-straight wins in the series.
Â
For the second time this season, Taylor Steinke netted a second-half penalty kick for an equalizing goal. Coincidentally both were against the Aggies, but this time it was USU that scored the third and final goal of the game to secure the win.
Â
The Rams continued to challenge after USU's eventual game-winning goal in the 67th minute, but narrow misses each time. A near Liv Layton to Gracie Armstrong connection in the 78th minute saw the ball sail just over Armstrong's head in the box and then Kristen Noonan had a touch opportunity in the box in the 86th minute that was just beyond her reach in a diving attempt. Â
Â
Goals
6' Ashley Cardovo – USU
The senior midfielder connected on a penalty kick in the six-minute mark after a foul from CSU's Sarah Hogenkamp in the box.
Â
53' Taylor Steinke - CSU
The senior forward found the bottom right part of the goal for her successful penalty kick and the equalizer. Â
Â
67' Ashley Cardovo – USU
For the second time and for the game winter, Cardovo received an assist from Kami Warner and scored in the lower right goal area.
