Rams Earn First Series Win at Broncos

5/2/2021 3:28:00 PM | Softball

Colorado State took two games on Sunday to earn its first series win at Boise State in program history.

BOISE, Idaho – For the first time in program history, the Colorado State softball team earned a series win at Boise State after winning two games on Sunday. The Rams resumed the halted game from Saturday, earning a 5-1 victory before cruising to a 10-2 win in the series finale in six frames.

Colorado State's Sydney Hornbuckle made the start in the circle for game two, throwing a complete-game to earn her first collegiate win. The freshman tossed seven frames, allowing just one-earned run and striking out four batters. Danielle Serna powered the offense with a 3-for-3 performance in the dish, which included a double. Tara Shadowen also added to the offensive surge with a 2-for-2 line with two runs scored, an RBI, double and solo homer. Jordan Acosta also reached multiple hits in the win, with a triple and scoring a run.

The game started Saturday afternoon, but was halted due to weather and resumed Sunday morning. The Rams were leading 1-0 off a RBI ground out by Maya Matsubara, when the game stopped in the bottom of the second. CSU added to its lead in the third after Acosta lead the inning off with a triple before scoring on a wild pitch. Colorado State pushed another run across in the fourth after Acosta knocked a single to center to hold a 3-0 lead.

Boise State got its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth after a pair of singles scored a run. The Ram pushed their lead to four again in the fifth after Hailey Smith hit a two-out double down the left field line to score the final run of the game. The Broncos juiced the bases in the sixth and had two runners on base in the seventh, but the Rams' defense kept them off the board to secure the 5-1 win.

After a short break in-between games, Colorado State kept its momentum from game two into the series finale. Sophomore Julia Cabral got the nod in the circle and had a solid performance, as she did not allow a Boise State baserunner until the fourth inning. The righty retired 10-consecutive batters before giving up a walk in the bottom of the fourth. Boise State went on to score that walk during the next at bat with a double – one of the three total hits.

The Rams flipped a switch during the next inning, exploding for nine runs on seven hits, including a Bronco error, to take a commanding 9-1 lead. CSU batted around the lineup as 13 batters came to the plate during the run. Colorado State totaled three singles, two doubles, two triples and a homer in the frame. Ashley Michelena batted twice as did Tara Shadowen and Maya Matsubara all reaching base safely.

Colorado State put the pressure on Boise State, looking to end the game early, but a solo homer by the Broncos in the bottom of the fifth kept the game going. The Rams again pushed their lead to eight in the top of the sixth after a double by Donaldson followed by an Acosta single put the game able to end early again. BSU put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the frame via a hit by pitch and walk with just one out. Cabral did not sweat it, striking out the next batter for her fifth K of the game before securing the run-rule victory forcing the next batter to fly out.

Five different Rams recording multiple hits in the win, led by Haley Donaldson who was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Ashley Michelena also posted a 2-for-3 performance, scoring two runs and knocking her third triple of the season. Julia Cabral (4-5) received the win after hurling six innings, allowing just two earned runs and striking out five batters. Cabral has won her last two starts and have combined for just three earned runs.

Colorado State will return to Ram Field and host San Diego State, May 8-9 for its final home stand of the 2021 season. The Rams will finish the season on the road at San Jose State, May 14-15.
