Team wins seven of nine matches
GLENDALE, Ariz. – With just a week of practice prepare for the dual season, the goal was to have fun and come out swinging for Colorado State's women's tennis team.
Â
That, and produce a win, which the Rams did in opening the spring season with a 6-1 victory over New Mexico State at the Paseo Racquet Club. It is the second year in a row CSU has opened with a dual win. The lineup won two of three doubles matches and five of the six in singles play.
Â
"It was a great first team win today for the Rams," head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "They came out with great energy and enjoyed the opportunity to compete. It was a battle, and we're happy to get the W. We're excited for our next match against Arizona State."
Â
With Matea Mihaljevic's late arrival back to the team after the break, the Rams' No. 32 ranked doubles team was broken up, with newcomer Sarah Weekley stepping in and playing with Radka Buzkova in the No. 2 slot. Even still, the Rams secured the doubles point as Somer Dalla-Bona and Sarka Richterova – ITA Fall Nationals qualifiers – won at the top spot, 6-4, with the No. 3 tandem of Tracy Guo and Lucia Natal posting the same score in the third position.
Â
Half of their singles victories were harder to come by, as three Rams needed a third set to claim a win, and Richterova and Natal did so after dropping the first set. Richterova, playing at No. 1, upended Harsha Challa 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5). Natal dropped the first set to Mingfang Zhu 6-4 at No. 4, then responded 6-4, 6-1 in the next two. Anastasiia Kotsyuba won 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in the sixth position.
Â
The Rams swept the top four spots in singles, with Buzkova prevailing 6-0, 7-6 (4) at No. 2; Dalla-Bona 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3.
Â
Saturday, the Rams remain in Arizona to complete their opening weekend, taking on Arizona State, also off to a 1-0 start, at 9:30 a.m.
