Rams Battle Past Bobcats

It was far from an easy Sunday stroll, despite the scoreline
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Like students this upcoming week at Colorado State, the student-athletes on the floor were tested a little earlier than their peers.
Â
The Rams (7-4) put up triple-digit points for the first time this season with a 115-72 victory over the Peru State Bobcats (8-4). The win stops a two-game skid Colorado State had suffered against in-state opponents and wraps up their home non-conference schedule on a high note.
Â
"We did what we needed to do here today, particularly in the second half," head coach Niko Medved said. "Whenever you're in a rut, it's never going to be easy, and sometimes that's just the way of the world."
Â
The win is one for the history books -- 115 points are the third-highest total in program history. Meanwhile, the school record for assists was broken thanks to plenty of sharing of the ball, with 35 assists.
Â
The big names for the Rams continued to provide the scoring. John Tonje continued to produce, putting up 19 points and going five-for-five from behind the arch. Meanwhile, Isaiah Stevens resumed his return to action with a double-double of 24 points and 10 assists in just his fourth game of the year.
Â
"It's definitely a process with it, but I'd like to think I didn't skip a beat," Stevens said. "It takes time to get the balance and the rhythm back, but I'm starting to feel better and better each game."
Â
Not only were the big names a factor, but so were the big men. James Moors put up 12 points along with six rebounds. His partner, Patrick Cartier reached double digits with 12 points of his own from down low.
Â
While things started slowly for Colorado State in the first half, they quickly got back to their way of playing basketball. This included capitalizing on Peru State's 17 turnovers and adding 24 points off said turnovers. The lead was comfortable enough to bring those off the bench and build their own confidence up as well.
Â
"They work hard and deserve the opportunity to get out there when it's right," Stevens said. "Some guys get their confidence up, make some shots, and being aggressive."
Â
While the 43-point win is the largest margin of victory since beating Nevada by 56 on January 14, 2015, it wasn't all easy Sunday afternoon. In fact, the Rams did find themselves in a hole early in the first half.
Â
The Bobcats came out flying, hitting five of six threes, giving them a lead of seven and putting Colorado State on the back foot. While the Rams got more situated with their game, it still wasn't enough to pull away and put the game to bed early enough for Medved.
Â
"We just got to be sharp and got to be great at things that don't require talent," Medved said. "Talking, communicating, and being dialed in every possession of what we have to do is what I'm talking about. If you or everybody else take a play off here or there, the margins are small to try and win any of these games."
Â
This was a much-needed win for the Rams, as they didn't want to head into finals with three straight losses. They found their competitive edge once again, making it a no-contest affair midway through the second half.
Â
With the win, Colorado State continues to make Moby Arena a fortress in its own right. They end non-conference play at home with a promising 7-1 record but remain with a negative 1-3 record away from Fort Collins.
Â
"I don't know how much I'll take from today, but this week it's going to take a stock into the big picture and just seeing where we are," Medved said. "We look at our schedule, look at the things we do well, the things we need to clean up and look at if we're doing the right thing that we're playing."
Â
The margin to win any game is small, especially when the upcoming matches are going to be a challenge. While the Rams have the week off of gameplay to complete finals, they'll be back at it to finish their non-conference schedule on the road this upcoming Sunday against Saint Mary's before closing it out on Wednesday, December 21 in Phoenix against USC.
