Colorado State scored in the top of the eighth on a RBI double from Danielle Serna to win its final game of the Lopes Up Classic
PHOENIX – In the final game of the Lopes Up Classic, the Rams beat Incarnate Word in eight innings to post a 4-1 record for the weekend. It was the second game of the weekend against the Cardinals and the Rams recorded a win in both contests.
It was a pitcher's duel from the start, as neither team got a runner past second until Colorado State did in the fifth. Incarnate Word loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but back-to-back outs got the Rams off the field. CSU put a runner on base in the sixth and seventh frames, but couldn't register a run – including getting thrown out at home for the last out of the seventh.
In extras and with the international tiebreaker in play, the Rams broke the scoreless tie in the top of the eighth inning after a RBI double to right field from Danielle Serna drove in Ashley York for the first run of the game. In the home half of the inning, UIW moved its runner to third on a sac bunt, but Colorado State's defense held strong recording the final two outs to secure the victory.
Sydney Hornbuckle earned the win for the Rams, as she threw the complete game striking out four. Ashley York, Hailey Smith and Kaitlyn Cook all recorded multiple hits, including all having an extra-base hit.
UP NEXT
Colorado State will return to Fort Collins and have its home opener on Friday, March 4 against Saint Mary's (CA). The Rams will host the Colorado Classic March 4-6 at Ram Field, welcoming Saint Mary's (CA), Wisconsin and Utah Valley.
