Shootaround: Rest Trumps Short Court Time for Rams

CSU opens tourney play Thursday in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Every team in the tourney has 50 minutes for a shootaround the day of a game, be it at the Thomas & Mack Center, Cox Pavilion, or a mix of both.
Â
Thursday, Colorado State declined. They did the same on Wednesday, choosing rather to wait to see who their opponent would be (Utah State beat Air Force), then getting in a workout at the University of Southern Nevada.
Â
The Rams' time was scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday, so Medved felt it just made more sense to allow his team to get some extra rest, giving them a later walk-up call and breakfast time. With three games in three days, keeping his team fresh becomes a balancing act, starting with Thursday's 7 p.m. (MT) tip.
Â
"We practiced (Wednesday) night, and what's pretty typical is we'll do a walk-through in the hotel," Medved said. "You only have 25 minutes on the court and it's early, so for us, instead of waking the guys up at 8:15, we're better off getting them some sleep. If we have a later time closer to our pregame meal we might, but we're pretty comfortable doing stuff at our hotel."
Â
Colorado State enters the tournament on a pretty good roll, having won three in a row and eight of the past nine. In the run, the Rams have a win over every team on their side of the bracket.
Â
The Series: The Rams swept both games this season, winning by five at home early in the year, prevailing by nine on the road late. In the Mountain West tourney, the Rams have dropped all three matchups with the Aggies.
Â
What to Watch Utah State: Justin Bean has 24 points and 17 rebounds in the two contests, and the Aggies have had four double-digit scorers in each meeting. Sean Bairstow's 20 points in the first was the best outing by an Aggie vs. the Rams this year.
Â
What to Watch Colorado State: The Rams have had three players go for 20 in the two prior games, David Roddy, Isaiah Stevens and Kendle Moore. Moore's night gave him 1,000 career points.
Â
Of Note: Colorado State is 15-21 all-time in the Mountain West tournament, with the lone championship coming back in 2003. The last time the Rams played for the title was 2017, losing to Nevada. … Utah State has reached the title game the past three years, winning twice, but losing to San Diego State in 2021.
