Team splits opening weekend of Mountain West play
FRESNO, Calif. – The start of Mountain West play didn't mean the end of the challenges of the season, only an extension of them for Colorado State's women's tennis team. Sunday's matchup only highlighted the reality.
Â
The Rams finished the first weekend of conference play falling 4-1 to No. 68 Fresno State on Sunday, giving the team a split on their California trip after beating San Jose State on Saturday. Colorado State is now 7-6 on the season, all six of the losses coming to teams currently ranked by the ITA.
Â
"We have come very close to these ranked teams, which shows the level we are able to compete at," coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Today, we came up short against a strong team, but with some minor adjustments, we can take these close losses to a win. I think we have handled the challenges well, but as a team, we have to go back and really work on some areas that are holding us back from breaking through barrier."
Somer Dalla-Bona picked up the team's lone win on the day, taking her No. 2 singles match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. She and doubles partner Sarka Richterova won at the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-0, but the Bulldogs earned the doubles point by winning at the other two spots. Fresno State secured the victory with straight-sets wins in singles in the first, third and sixth positions.
Â
Dalla-Bona played well all weekend, winning both of her singles matches in straight sets and not dropping a game in doubles. She is now 16-9 in singles play and is on a streak of seven consecutive victories.
"Somer has had a fantastic weekend," Tran said. "She's been playing some exceptional tennis that started against a tough battle with CU and she has continued to grow and it's shown with her results. Somer has a steady game that tires her opponents, she's stayed calm and collected throughout her matches which has ultimately helped her in the last few matches. I am excited to see what she can do in the upcoming conference matches."
When the match concluded, Colorado State was leading on the two matches still being played at Nos. 4 and 5 singles; Matea Mihaljevic and Lucia Natal had both won the first set.
Â
Colorado State will head north to Laramie next week to continue Mountain West play, facing Air Force on Saturday and New Mexico on Sunday.
