Rams’ Comeback Falls Short in Game Two

4/23/2022 6:40:00 PM | Softball

A lead-off homer by Danielle Serna in the seventh gave Colorado State a chance but could not complete the comeback.

FRESNO, Calif. – The Rams once again scored the first runs of the game but could not hang on as they dropped the second game of the series at Fresno State, 4-3. Colorado State looked to switch the momentum in the final frame after Danielle Serna hit a lead-off homer, but the comeback fell short.

Ashley Michelena and Danielle Serna led the Rams with a pair of hits each, including a triple by Michelena and a homer by Serna. Hailey Smith and Maya Matsubara also added an RBI to the box score along with Serna. Jetta Nannen started in the circle, tossing three frames and allowing two runs before Serna come in on relief. Serna (2-4) finished the three innings and was given the loss after allowing the two go-ahead runs.

The Rams finished the game with five hits, three of which came in the first two innings, drew two walks and left four stranded on base.

Colorado State got on the board first in the opening frame after Ashley Michelena started the game with a triple to right field. Two batters later, Hailey Smith hit a sac fly out to left to score the first run of the game. The Rams added to their lead in the second, after loading the bases for Maya Matsubara who push a run across on a fielder's choice to lead 2-0.

Fresno State got on the scoreboard in the fourth after back-to-back singles scored a run. CSU made a pitching change and brought Danielle Serna in on relief. The Bulldog added to their lead with another single that scored a pair of runs which gave them the 3-2 advantage.

From the third through the sixth inning, Colorado State sent just 14 batters to the dish, recording just two hits – Michelena single in the fifth and McVay single in the sixth.

The Bulldogs scored in the bottom of the six, which turned out to be the deciding run, after an infield single plated a runner after an error.

Colorado State looked to make a comeback in the final inning after Danielle Serna hit a lead-off homer to left, but the Rams could not build off it, going down in order the rest of the way.
