Long Ball Sinks Rams in Series Finale

4/3/2022 2:41:00 PM | Softball

Utah State added three home runs to the series total in Sunday’s game to sweep the Rams.

LOGAN, Utah – Colorado State got on the board in game three at Utah State, but the Aggies' offense again used the long ball to hand the Rams their third loss of the weekend on Sunday. CSU finished the game with five hits, including the lone score of the weekend after Peyton Allen hit a RBI triple in the sixth.

Colorado State's five hits in the series finale was the most for weekend, led by Makenna McVay who was 2-for-2 while pinch hitting. She first appeared in the fourth with a lead-off single to short before reaching again in the sixth with the same hit with one out. She rounded the bases during the next at bat as Peyton Allen hit a triple to left field to give the Rams' offense some juice. Unfortunately, CSU sent just five batters to the plate the rest of the game to stall any momentum change.

Utah State scored in the first frame with a three-run homer before adding to its lead in the fourth with a two run shot. CSU got on the board in the sixth, but USU returned with a solo homer in the home half of the frame. Utah State used the long ball over the series, hitting six home runs to score all but one of its runs.

Besides the two hits from McVay, the Rams tallied another three hits in the loss, all from different players. The lone RBI of the series came from Allen's triple in the sixth. Sydney Hornbuckle started in the circle and was given the loss after a 3 2/3 outing. The sophomore faced 15 batters, allowing five earned runs and struck out four. Julia Cabral finished the game after coming on relief in the fourth and tossing the last 2 1/3 frames allowing the one earned run in the sixth.

UP NEXT
Colorado State will return home and face New Mexico for a three-game series starting on Friday, April 8.
