Lexie Keller Sets MW Championship Record in the Heptathlon

CLOVIS, Calif. – Putting the championship's first points on the board in a big way, Lexie Keller captured the conference's heptathlon championship record in Day two of the 2022 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.

Keller, of Albuquerque, N.M., accumulated 5834 points across the seven-event multi, besting the previous championship record of 5,723 set by Sandy Fortner of New Mexico in 2010. The total was two points shy of Mountain West's all-time record. For this season, the mark is fifth in the NCAA.

In the day's opening event – the long jump – Keller notched a 20'1.5'' on her second jump that carried her to the win and registered as the second-best mark in school history behind Olympian Janay DeLoach's 21'3.25''. Previously Keller was fourth on the list at 19'8''.

She threw a 123'6'' in the javelin next for a personal record and third-place finish before finishing with a runner-up placing in the 800-meter race. The 5834 points improved her already established school record by 31 points. Keller became the third Ram all-time to win the heptathlon title, joining Katie Lloyd (2005, '06) and Jessica Green ('16).

On Wednesday, Keller won the 100mH with a time of 13.87, PRing by .03 seconds to improve her No. 8 spot all-time at CSU. She then cleared 5'8.5'' in the high jump for another PR and the 13th-best mark in CSU history.

The decathlon concluded with a Ram on the podium as well. Coming into the day, Mauricio Galindo Vega was in third place, while Drew Thompson and Elijah Scott were in fifth and ninth, respectively. Thompson finished with 6940 points to take third place and his first-ever podium visit in conference. Galindo Vega followed in sixth and Scott in eighth to bring CSU's haul to 12 team points in the event.

At 9:30 p.m. local time, the first starter gun for a non-multi event went off, signaling the start to the women's 10K. The three Lobo heavy favorites swept the event, but the Rams crossed at 4th-5th-6th-7th-9th to accumulate 14 points. The men's 10K followed with Tanner Norman and Mason Brown placing fourth and eight for six team points.

Friday's field events commence at 3 pm MT, while the gun for the running events doesn't fire until 6 p.m. MT and consists of mostly qualifying rounds except for the 3,000-meter steeplechase races to cap the night.
