Colorado State part of 10-team field at Bedford Cup
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With a restructured roster, Colorado State's women's tennis team is set to begin fall play at the Bedford Cup this weekend at the Air Force Academy. The four-day event begins Thursday with doubles play.
Â
The Rams are part of a 10-team field which includes the host school and fellow Mountain West foes Boise State and Utah State, as well as BYU, Denver, Idaho, Idaho State, New Mexico State and Weber State.
Â
"With a new roster, I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone competes this weekend," coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "We've had a few good weeks of practice together. It's always more fun to compete against different opponents, and this will give us a snapshot of where we are as a team and what we can improve on."
Â
In her first season at the helm, Tran led the Rams to a 15-8 dual record, the program's most successful campaign. It concluded with an appearance in the semifinals of the Mountain West Championships, only the second time the team has reached the round of the tournament.
Â
The Bedford Cup starts Thursday at 4 p.m. with doubles play. The next three days, play begins at 9 a.m. Friday features one round of doubles and two rounds of singles; Saturday two rounds of doubles and one round of singles; and Sunday concludes the event with one round of each.
Â
This tournament gives the team an opportunity for additional bonding in a competitive format.
Â
"Air Force does a good job of hosting an individual tournament, but making it feel as much of a team event as possible," Tran said. "Not only is it a chance to go out there and compete, but we'll also be able to watch and support each other. Getting on the road and spending time with our team will help us get to know each other quickly, and we love enjoying those moments."
Â
Colorado State returns three players from a year ago, including Radka Buzkova, an All-Mountain West selection in both doubles and singles. Her 25 singles wins were tied for the third-most in a single season and her .733 winning percentage (25-5) stands as second-best all time in a year. Her 26 wins in doubles with partner Matea Mihaljevic set the program record for a season, with teammate Sarka Richterova's 22 victories in doubles tied for fourth with her partner from a year ago, Somer Dalla-Bona. Sarah Weekley returns for her sophomore year, but the rest of the team is made up of four transfers and a freshman.
