Rams Fight to Scoreless Draw

9/8/2022 7:32:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Defensive struggles plus a lack of attack led to tie

A bit flat-footed and a lack of an emotional spark led to a rather flatlined outing.

Colorado State didn't have the charge it needed against the Montana Grizzlies, hanging on for a scoreless draw Thursday at Rams Field. While not a disappointing loss for Keeley Hagen's side, the Rams could not muster up much attack across the entire 90 minutes and were tested defensively all match long.

"We're learning, and we're trying to get better," Hagen said. "You can't really have a feeling-out period. Credit to Montana; well organized team. Ultimately, I just told our team now that we need to do us better and play harder and just put more energy in."

The Rams seemed to be sizing up their opponent all of the first half, where they fell behind to a relentless Grizzlies attack.

CSU lost out on several one-on-one battles in the midfield which opened up gaps and gave the defense something to work on all afternoon.

"I think one of our big goals as a backline is to stay disciplined no matter what is going on around us," Taylor Bee said. "They (Montana) tested us in a different way; that's a big positive to take away and we came out with a shutout."

With the defense consistently tested by several odd-man rushes, open spaces and balls into the 18-yard box, goalkeeper Emilie Gavillet continued her performance of playing every minute of the season so far while making four saves on net and parried out several other opportunities from Montana, including a critical top-right corner save in the 70thminute.

It was her second successive clean sheet, though this one required more effort than her one-save performance in her last game.

"Busier than last week; that's what you want when you're playing is to get some action. I'm just trying to make the best out of it, if we can't get people going forward," Gavillet said. "It was a wake-up call. Overall, the second half was way better; we just got the ball way more often and got more opportunities and I think we could've gotten it in the net."

In the first half alone, the Grizzlies doubled the Rams in shots with six which found their way toward the twine. This was thanks in part to the amount of possession Montana found, which was 54 percent by the time the final whistle blew.
This frustrated Hagen, who gave out a stern talking to her team after the first 45 minutes.

"I got on the team at halftime about the feeling-out period," Hagen said. "It was just a little bit frustrating to get a draw but also somewhat grateful because we were getting pounded. We kept the ball out of the back of the net, and to get a point is better than losing."

It was the first time this season the Rams ended with a draw after the new rules of no overtime were put into effect. It's also the second time Colorado State was left off the scoresheet.

What Hagen had to tell them was news to nobody in the huddle. She expects more, and so do they.

"It's obvious to everybody that we weren't doing our best," Gavillet said. "She (Hagen) realized we can do better, and we did it better in the second half but not enough."

The attack had some promise after the break where Liv Layton and Kendra Gipson often times led attacks down the sidelines but could never surface to anything great in the box. The Rams did find the net late from Aleyse Evers, but it was ruled back for offsides.

As the time wore down, the play became for physical with Bee finding herself in the center of the fray couple of times. With Montana pressing for a winning goal late on while the Rams were trying to do the same, collisions were bound to happen.

"I definitely do think I was just being physical as I am, so it was a little bit frustrating," Bee said. "To get to the middle of the field where I thought I won that cleanly, but what's important after that is the response. It didn't go our way, but we didn't let it get us down."

The next level in the 2022 season for the Rams is this Sunday at 3 p.m. as they host the in-state rival Denver for their third straight home game before hitting the road.
