Second-Half Drought Downs Rams at The Pit

Colorado State scored just 28 points in the second half, while shooting 4-of-11 from behind the arc and 5-of-23 for the game
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Entering the week, Colorado State was No. 3 in the country in 3-point shooting, hitting at a 40.3 mark. Thursday night in The Pit, the Rams struggled to find a groove from deep, missing their first eight attempts and were 1-of-16 before finishing 5-of-23 in a 64-59 loss at New Mexico.

Colorado State was led by McKenna Hofschild with 18 points and six assists but finished with a season-high five turnovers. Sydney Mech added 13 points, followed by Destiny Thurman and Cailyn Crocker, both scoring eight points. Cali Clark continued to control the paint, pulling down 10 rebounds and adding four blocks.

CSU (13-7, 6-3) struggled in the first quarter, shooting just 29 percent and missing all six 3-point attempts to trail 22-12 after the first 10 minutes. New Mexico went on an 8-0 run midway through the frame, while also keeping the Rams scoreless for nearly two minutes.

Colorado State responded before half, shooting 50 percent from the floor in the second. CSU trailed by 12 before a 10-0 run early in the second quarter got the Rams within one before the media break. Both teams traded baskets down the stretch, but the Rams outscored the Lobos 19-7 in the frame before holding a 31-29 advantage at half.

The Rams came out flat to start the second half and New Mexico went on an 11-0 run to retake the lead, 40-31. Colorado State finally scored a basket in the second half at 3:41 and would score just five points the rest of the frame to trail 45-38.

CSU made a spark to start the fourth quarter, hitting three-consecutive 3-pointers to tied the game at 47-all. From there, the Rams fouled on defense and turned the ball to trail by five. Colorado State tied the game again late at 59-59 with 38 seconds left. CSU attempted to take the lead on a three-pointer during its next possession but was off the mark. UNM made a pair of free throws before the Rams missed their final 3-pointer attempt.

Colorado State is now 0-5 in games decided by five-or-fewer points and holds a minus 5.9 in its seven losses of the season. The Rams will play at Air Force on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
