Rams Find a Way to Earn Win In Fresno

2/18/2023 6:54:00 PM | Men's Basketball

John Tonje’s free throws in the final seconds helped CSU past Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – It was a familiar situation for Colorado State Saturday afternoon with a close game late, this time CSU came out with the win 60-57 over Fresno State.

John Tonje hit the go-ahead free throws with 4.9 seconds remaining and Jalen Lake sealed the game with two more free throws as the Rams ended the game on a 12-2 run over the final 1:30 to earn the road win. Tonje not only had ice in his veins to hit the clutch shots, but did so with a swollen eye from earlier in the game.

CSU held a 27-24 halftime advantage, but Fresno State started the second half hot using a 17-2 run to open it and build an 11-point lead. Colorado State was playing catch-up from that point on.

The Rams regrouped from the early Fresno State run with a 9-0 of their own to get back within two by the halfway mark of the second half.

Both teams hit a scoring drought entering the stretch run of the game. They went scoreless for a little over four minutes before Fresno State went on a 5-0 run all from Leo Colimerio to go up seven with 2:07 remaining.

It was all CSU after that. Seniors Isaiah Stevens and John Tonje took over scoring 10 of the team's final 12 points. Meanwhile, the Rams held FSU to 1-of-2 from the field and took advantage of the Bulldogs twice missing the front end of a 1-and-1 situation. To earn the comeback win.

Game Notes
- Isaiah Stevens led all Rams with 17 points in the game. He is now tied with Bill Green (1960-63) for career points at CSU with 1,682.
- Patrick Cartier (13) and John Tonje (10) also reached double figures scoring.
- Freshman Taviontae Jackson grabbed a team-leading and career-high eight rebounds in the game.
- The Rams held FSU to 39.7% shooting from the field. It's the seventh time this season they have held an opponent under 40.0%.
- Colorado State's 11-point comeback win is the third time this year coming back from down double figures and 15th time under head coach Niko Medved.
- Saturday's game was the 150th game for Medved as the CSU head coach. He is now 89-61 while leading the Green and Gold.
- CSU extended its win streak against Fresno State to nine games. It was just the program's fourth win in Fresno.
