John Tonje’s free throws in the final seconds helped CSU past Fresno State
FRESNO, Calif. – It was a familiar situation for Colorado State Saturday afternoon with a close game late, this time CSU came out with the win 60-57 over Fresno State.
Â
John Tonje hit the go-ahead free throws with 4.9 seconds remaining and Jalen Lake sealed the game with two more free throws as the Rams ended the game on a 12-2 run over the final 1:30 to earn the road win. Tonje not only had ice in his veins to hit the clutch shots, but did so with a swollen eye from earlier in the game.
Â
CSU held a 27-24 halftime advantage, but Fresno State started the second half hot using a 17-2 run to open it and build an 11-point lead. Colorado State was playing catch-up from that point on.
Â
The Rams regrouped from the early Fresno State run with a 9-0 of their own to get back within two by the halfway mark of the second half.
Â
Both teams hit a scoring drought entering the stretch run of the game. They went scoreless for a little over four minutes before Fresno State went on a 5-0 run all from Leo Colimerio to go up seven with 2:07 remaining.
Â
It was all CSU after that. Seniors Isaiah Stevens and John Tonje took over scoring 10 of the team's final 12 points. Meanwhile, the Rams held FSU to 1-of-2 from the field and took advantage of the Bulldogs twice missing the front end of a 1-and-1 situation. To earn the comeback win.
Â
