Bottom three spots in singles pick up victories at NAU
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – For the first time in more than two decades, Colorado State's women's tennis team found itself in national rankings. It only took two matches for the No. 53 Rams to meet up against another ranked team.
Â
Sunday, No. 71 Northern Arizona defended its home court with a 4-3 decision over CSU by winning the doubles point and claiming victories in the top three spots of singles. The loss snapped the Rams' seven-match win streak, the longest in program history.
Â
CSU's No. 2 doubles tandem of Ky Ecton and Zara Lennon were the first to finish with a 6-2 win, but the Lumberjacks won at the other two spots. Again, Colorado State came back quickly.
Â
The bottom part of the singles lineup struck with straight-sets wins, doing so in reverse order. Sarka Richterova won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6, with Luana Avelar prevailing with matching 6-3 scores at No. 5, and Lennon made it a 3-1 team edge for the Rams with 7 -6, 6-1 decision at No. 4
Â
The Lumberjacks won in straight sets in the third position, but the Rams' top players, Radka Buzkova and Emily Dush both played three-setters after dropping the opening set. The 2s were the final match on the court, with Dush falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Â
Colorado State, now 7-2, next takes to the court at home on March 5, hosting Chicago State at 10 a.m.
