Colorado State to square off with Cal Baptist for first time on Sunday
FORT COLLINS, Co.- The Colorado State Rams head west for a Sunday night matchup with Cal Baptist. It will be the Rams first matchup with the Lancers in program history.Â
The Rams are coming off a weekend in which they did not record a loss including their three-goal shutout home-opening win against Louisiana Tech on Sunday. Head coach Keeley Hagen sees promise in holding an opponent to an early season goose egg. Â
"Anytime we get a shutout, it's a positive," Hagen said. "As we continue to play more games, we expect our group to become more and more cohesive."
Colorado State's offense has found its footing early in the season, finding the back of the net four times in just two matches. Junior midfielder Katy Coffin and sophomore Auburn transfer Olivia Fout have both struck twice in as many games.Â
The Rams' defense held strong in their two opening-week matchups. Junior goalkeeper Shayna Ross was chosen for net-minding duties in the first two matchups of the season where she stopped three shots, two coming in Sunday's shutout victory. Ross started nine matches for the Rams in 2021 racking up 32 saves en route to a 5-3-1 record. Last week's action was the first game appearance for Ross since November of 2021. Â
"[Ross] has grown so much in the past two years," Hagen said. "That is a credit to her investment in her game and taking in coaching points from Josh [Perdum], who has also done a phenomenal job with her development."Â
Ross and the rest of the Rams are pushed daily to be better than they were the day before. Even after a solid start to the season, Hagen expects this team to continue moving in the right direction.
"Every day we ask our players to be intentional about getting better and they are doing just that," she said.
Colorado State kicks off against Cal Baptist on Sunday night at 6 p.m., on ESPN+ before returning home for one match against Missouri- Kansas City next week.
