Team unveils new doubles partners to open campaign
COLORADO SPRINGS – With weather expected to roll into the area in the afternoon, the Bedford Cup moved up the schedule on Thursday's opening day, then even extended it a bit just in case.
Â
By the end of the first day, Colorado State's season had opened with two rounds of doubles matches for four newly formed tandems, then pushed through with a round of singles.
Â
"We entered this tournament with the mindset of seeing where our level is and determining what we need to improve on," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "We handled our nerves pretty well for the first day of the fall.
Â
"We stayed calm and competed well today. Our goal is to improve each day with this tournament."
Â
Each doubles team split two matches on the day, all playing in the main Blue bracket. Luana Avelar and Logan Voeks opened with an 8-7 (3) victory over the Denver team of Claudia Martinez de Velasco/Alice Otis, then fell to O'Lideadha sisters, Lola and Sol, of Montana State 8-6. Also winning in the opening round was Zara Lennon and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya, posting an 8-2 decision over the New Mexico pairing of Maria Sodre and Sofia Toborga; they'd fall 8-3 to Wyoming's Violetta Borodina/Sophie Zehender next.
Â
Radka Buzkova and Sarah Weekley dropped an 8-2 match to Denver's Caroline Driscoll/Louise Wikander before bounding back with an 8-5 victory over Saffron Dowse/Naomi Schrader of Idaho. The CSU pairing of Victoria Erechtchenko and Sarka Richterova fell to Emmie Moore/Madison Smith of BYU 8-3 at the start, then came back with an 8-1 decision against Valentina Rodas/Diana Khaydarshina of Idaho.
Â
"We have four new doubles teams who are still learning to play with each other," Tran said. "We expected it to be messy. Lu and Logan performed well together for being a young, new team."
Â
The day closed with the Rams picking up three singles victories in seven matches, with Avelar earning a bye in the Echo draw.
Â
Buzkova, the overall No. 1 seed in the Alpha bracket, moved past Katherine Jhang of New Mexico, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-0; in the same bracket, Lennon dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to Pauline Ernstberger of Boise State.
Â
In Bravo, Sarah Weekley fell 7-5, 7-5 to Hana Cho of Idaho State. In Charlie, Erechtchenko beat Denver's Louise Wikander 6-3, 6-2, while Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya dropped a 6-1, 6-3 score to Lena Beckx of Idaho. In Delta, Richterova advanced with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Angel Bean of Montana State, while in Echo Voeks dropped a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) decision to DU's Anastasia Simonov.
Â
Play resumes Friday at 9 a.m. with doubles and singles matches on the schedule.
