Slow Start Sinks Rams at Air Force

1/31/2024 8:55:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Colorado State scored a season-low 14 points in the first half

USAF ACADEMY – After scoring a season-low 14 points in the first half, Colorado State suffered a 59-49 loss to Air Force on Wednesday night in Clune Arena. The Rams had a cold night shooting, finishing at a 36 percent clip and making just one 3-pointer despite entering the game shooting 37.3 percent to lead the Mountain West and No. 17 in the country.

Colorado State struggled in the first half, with shots that looked good off the hand and even halfway down the hoop at times and rattled off. McKenna Hofschild and Sydney Mech lead with four points apiece. The Rams were aggressive on defense, grabbing seven steals. CSU also scored all 14 points of the first half in the paint, missing all five attempts from behind the arc.

The Rams held Air Force to eight points in the second quarter, which included forcing the Falcons to miss their first six shots in the frame. AF strung together three baskets after the media break, including a pair of 3-pointers. CSU scored just two points in the last 5:15 of the half.

In the second half, Colorado State cut the deficit to three after a pair of free throws by Cailyn Crocker, which were just the fifth and sixth of the game for the Rams. Air Force responded with small runs the rest of the frame to put CSU down by eight with 10 minutes left to play.

Colorado State trimmed the Falcons' lead to five with 2:59 left to play, but a 7-0 Air Force run had CSU trailing by 12 with under 90 seconds left.

Hofschild found a second-half groove, scoring 20 points and finishing with 24 to lead all scorers. Air Force turned the ball over 23 times with the Rams grabbing 13 steals – tying a season high (vs. SD Mines). The Rams finished with a season-low four assists, with three of them coming in the second half.
