Erechtchenko/Weekley knock off top seed in semis
LAS VEGAS – The fall is for experimenting and Mai-Ly Tran may have pleasantly stumbled upon a potent mix.
Paired together for the first time for the Mountain West Fall Individuals, the duo of Victoria Erechtchenko and Sarah Weekley have blazed through the doubles bracket, taking out two top seeds to reach Saturday's finals match at the Darling Tennis Center.
After opening the tournament over the fourth-seeded line, the Rams' combo slayed a bigger beast in the semifinals, knocking off the top-ranked duo from UNLV, Cindy Hu and Coco Zhau, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9. In the final two rounds, doubles moved to a best-of-three format. After splitting the first two sets, Colorado State jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the tiebreak, only to have the Rebels rally and even the score.
Responding, Erechtchenko and Weekley won the next two points to advance to the finals, where they will face another unseeded team, Boise State's Zdena Safaova and Maya Dutta. They opened the tournament with a win over CSU's other entry, Paisha Douglas and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya.
"It has been a lot of fun watching Sarah and Vici each match. They are doing a fantastic job at the basics," Tran said. "They have worked really well together and have stayed calm and collected. Sarah and Vici have complemented each other well this week. They have flexed their styles to each other.
"The Mountain West teams are competitive, and it shows how strong our team is to get to the finals of a tournament like this."
A win guarantees the duo a spot in the upcoming ITA Conference Masters which begin Nov. 7 in San Diego, Calif.
For the second day in a row, the freshman Douglas picked up a victory in a side match, beating San Jose State's Carla Urchoeguia, 6-3, 6-3.
