A New Kind of Steady

Women moves to 2-0 on season
Slow and steady wins the race.
Â
In the past two games, Colorado State women's basketball was playing fast and rough. Friday, the calmness washed over the Rams in a 65-59 finish while playing Oregon State, a team who made it to the Elite 8 last season. This win makes the team 2-0.
Â
The intimidating odds didn't hurt the dynamic duo of Hannah Ronsiek and Emma Ronsiek, who were back on the court draining 3s, one after each other.
Â
"Obviously, we know each other pretty well," Emma said. "We've been playing basketball together for a very long time, we just took a four-year gap. I found Hannah a few times, she found me a few times. I think we just play really well off each other."
Â
The two pulled out the stops with 50 of the teams' 65-points coming from the pair. Emma led with 26, hitting 6-of-11 from deep while leading the team with six assists, while the younger sister, Hannah, contributed 24, making four of her nine attempts from distance.
Â
However, getting past OSU is specifically challenging as their roster contains three players at and above the 6-foot-5 mark—making a zone which can seem impossible to penetrate.
Â
"They're seeing it differently," coach Ryun Williams said. "They're out there seeing that length and so we moved it a little bit. We put them on the top of the key so we could see it a little bit differently."
Â
Getting past the Beaver's defense continued to prove difficult, so, taking every chance to get the ball into the net, even after a missed field goal was essential.
Â
One person who helped them achieve those boards was Marta Leimane, a guard who racked up 10 rebounds throughout the game, being as versatile as they need her to be.
Â
"She can make plays like that because she knows how to read the game," Emma said. "(It's) definitely not shocking, but I think it's super cool that she did that."
Â
With a roster excited for the new season and what is to come, the quick and split-second nature of their play in their last two games showed them what doesn't work
Â
What they know does work is Leimane reading the court like an open book and the Ronsiek sisters continuing to fire each other up.
Â
"They were having fun, they fed off each other," Williams said. "We had some struggles in the first quarter but they both came out with the right mindset. I think they feed off each other well and you even see that in practice."
Â
Another achievement of the night was the absence of turnovers throughout the first, and most of, the second half.
Â
Ending the game with only two turnovers compared to the 13 from the Beavers, gave the Rams time with the ball they needed to push through the zone.
Â
And, if the game looks a little bleaker, they have a plan for that too.
Â
"(Keeping your cool) plays into us being experienced," Hannah said. "Having some veterans on the team, we know, basketball is a game of runs."
Â
The game of runs is not giving up after two missed shots, as women's basketball at CSU knows. It was the long game, one which takes no punches and continues to push along even with setbacks.
Â
Looks like the tortoise beat the hare.
