2/14/2024 9:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Sophomore Marta Leimane led all scorers with 22 points and added 10 rebounds for a career-first double-double

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – No love was in the air this Valentine's Day as Colorado State suffered a 67-64 defeat against UNLV on Wednesday night. Marta Leimane had a career night, scoring 22 points and added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of her career.

Rams trailed 11-4 early in the first but went on a 10-2 run during the last 4:45 of the frame to lead by one. UNLV tried the deep ball early but was kept to 1-of-8 in the first 10 minutes. The Rebels went on a 7-0 run midway through the second quarter to lead 20-16 but the Rams responded with back-to-back scores to retake the lead after a 3-pointer by Sanna Strom at the 4:13 mark. Both team would trade baskets until the break.

CSU shot 11-of-30 and 4-of-10 from deep in the first half, while keeping UNLV to 11-of-28 and 4-13 from 3-point range. The Rebels started 1-of-8 from 3 before finishing the half making three of their last four shots from behind the arch. Neither team shot a free throw in the first 20 minutes.

The third quarter saw both teams shoot better from 3-point range, including the Rams hitting 5-of-7 to lead 51-49 with 10 minutes left to play. The Rams built their largest lead of the game with 3:17 left in the third after back-to-back 3-pointers by Marta Leimane and Sanna Strom. But from then, CSU scored just four points while the Rebels trimmed the lead to two to finish the quarter.

UNLV started the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run to wipe out the Rams lead and to take the lead 58-53. CSU scored the first basket of the fourth but went scoreless for over six minutes. Hofschild hit a jumper with 23 seconds left to get the Rams within two but ran out of time down the stretch.

Leimane led the Rams with 22 points and added 10 rebounds – both led the team. Sanna Strom and Sydney Mech reached double-figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively. Hannah Ronsiek added eight rebounds and a team-high four assists. Colorado State added no points from the bench, while UNLV added 37 points.

Colorado State will return to Moby Arena this weekend for a game against Wyoming starting at 12:30 PM. Men's basketball will follow the women's game at 3:30 PM.
