Set pieces worked in team’s favor
GREELEY – Sought and secured.
Â
After 45 frustrating offensive minutes Thursday night, Colorado State's women's soccer team broke through in the second half to post a 3-0 road win against Northern Colorado at Jackson Field.
Â
Colorado State (1-1-1) had plenty of opportunities in the first half after accumulating 14 shots with eight shots on goal. With a half full of shots on goal, fouls, and 72% possession for the Rams leaving the game scoreless, they began to find their groove in the second half.Â
Â
"I'm proud of the groups response at halftime and figuring out a way to get the ball in the back of the net," coach Keeley Hagen said. "We obviously work on set pieces, and it was good to see different people sight the ball and helping out."
Â
Although the Bears made the Rams work for it, the motivation for Colorado State to find the back of the net in the second half was clear. Bridget Arnold's persistence to keep the ball and Kacie Laurie's corner kicks helped that happen.
Â
Set pieces worked extremely well for the Rams as all three goals came off of corner kicks. In the 62nd minute Mia Massey was able to dent the scoreboard with her second goal of the season off of Laurie's corner kick. Following Massey's goal, the Rams kicked it in gear, keeping possession of the ball in the offensive third.
Â
In the 81st minute, Taite DeLange found the back of the net once again off of Laurie's corner kick. Quickly following DeLange's goal, Maggie Altman was finally able to land a shot in the goal after several attempts throughout the whole game, which came from yet another corner kick, but this time assisted by Avery Vander Ven.Â
Â
After the Rams landed their first win of the season – and an offensive breakthrough – well-deserved smiles were aplenty.Â
Â
