Present in the Moment, Rams Snap Skid

CSU hands Omaha first loss with Stutzman goal
Keeley Hagen wants her team focused on the now, which turned out to be an extremely interesting place Friday night.
Â
Applying persistent pressure and getting closer to full strength, Colorado State's women's soccer team snapped a two-game slide and handed visiting Omaha its first setback of the season with a 1-0 victory at CSU Soccer Field.
Â
The Rams owned the pitch almost the entirety of the first 45 minutes with the midfield being particularly active offensively and defensively. The chances came early, with Maggie Altman snapping off the first of 13 shots on the night in the first two minutes of the contest.
Â
Pushing forward, the Rams earned 14 corners, thrice being called offside, one occasion erasing a goal by Liv Stutzman.
Â
"I think improvement in our composure and decision making. I'm really proud of our overall defensive pressure. I think that rattled our opponent a little bit," Hagen said. "They're a good team; they hadn't lost. I think our pressure was a big thing that impacted them."
Â
The pressure applied defensively led to sudden change into an attacking mode throughout the night as the Mavericks finished with just one shot, and it wasn't on net. If it wasn't the back line setting the charge, the midfield was taking away passing lanes and creating them for the Rams.
Â
It was a change from the prior two outings, and a welcome one as nothing was altered tactically.
Â
"I think it was more about executing. Our past few games have just been a little off, so we focused this week on just executing the little things, and I think it really paid off,' Mia Massey said. "The energy at the beginning of the game was amazing. We love this energy. It felt different this game than the past two games. It felt nice to feel that energy grow from that."
Â
Energy is what Sofia Coulombe is all about, and after sitting out the first seven matches due to an injury suffered over the summer, the sophomore was antsy to hit the pitch. All day. Once she finally did, she made an immediate impact, her feed inside the box to Stutzman leading to the game's only goal in the 30th minute.
Â
What she brings is speed and creativity up front is an energy all onto itself. So does her personality, which is bubbly. The Spaniard's English is good, but when she fumbles for a word in the locker room, she laughs when her teammates laugh at her.
Â
Her production was missed. She finished third on the team in scoring last year with 11 points, tied with her bestie, Mia Casey. All 11 of those points came in the final nine matches of the season, including a two-goal game at New Mexico, as she continually adjusted to the collegiate game.
Â
To come back and produce right away felt perfect.
Â
"It's every practice we try to practice the best we can to try to play. We have to earn our spot," Coulombe said. "That's what I've been working the whole summer to get back from injury for. I got some minutes in, so I'm super happy, and happy for the assist too.
Â
"People always like my energy, my creativeness on the field. I try to go on the field and show what I'm capable of. That assist for the goal makes a change. Not bad at all. I'm so excited for that assist."
Â
Her arrival came on the same night when Olivia Fout, who set the team single-season scoring and goals record a year ago, returned. Fout, who sustained a knee injury in the Mountain West championship match last year, fought her way back into some minutes the first three matches of the season, but pulled back to recover more.
Â
Coulombe played 20 minutes Friday, Fout 34. Both will be on a progression, an important one moving forward.
Â
"We have more depth. I told them before the game started, every player on our roster is extremely valuable and they have to be ready to get their moment," Hagen said. "We got to see a couple of different looks tonight, and I'm excited about a little bit more depth that's going to help as we continue to get into conference."
Â
The Rams will head into the first conference week – a pair of road matches in Colorado Springs at Air Force and Colorado College – as winners. Now 4-3-1 on the year, the lift makes a difference.
Â
An important one, Massey said, because the team hadn't shied away from what happened, they came back and attacked the issue.
Â
"I mean, Keeley always tells us to focus on the now and being present. That's what we want," Massey said. "We flushed our last games that didn't end our way and focused on the now and how can we get better for the next game.
Â
In the moment, now felt a whole lot better.
