Four Rams score goals in victory
COLORADO SPRINGS – Conference play marks a new section of the season, and Thursday's contest proved to be the perfect time for three new additions to the scoring column as Colorado State's women's soccer team exploded offensively.
The Rams dominated their first Mountain West opponent, earning a 4-0 road victory over Air Force to kick off conference play.
The Rams (5-3-1) had numerous opportunities throughout the match accumulating a total of 21 shots with eight on goal. In the first half the Rams tallied 14 shots, with three of those making it to the back of the net. Mia Casey started off the match in the first minute barely missing a shot on goal from a cross in the box, which was a precursor to the action to follow.
The Rams were able to take the lead in the 17th minute with Maggie Altman striking first finding the back of the net, her fourth time this season with a first career assist from freshman Kaja Dionne. Four minutes later, it was Mia Casey's turn, the sophomore's first of the season.
With Colorado State carrying the momentum, senior Kenady Leighton was able to score her first career goal in the 30th minute following a ricochet off the crossbar in the same game where she tied the program record for career starts (74). The Rams were able to walk off the field at halftime with their heads held high with a 3-0 lead against the Falcons.
Along with the offensive success, defensively Shayna Ross was a brick wall. Ross had five saves on the night which resulted in her fourth shutout of the season.
With the Rams maintaining possession for the majority of the game, Colorado State's final score came in the 73rd minute by Sofia Coulombe, Casey was credited with the assist and her third point of the contest. Coulombe brought energy to the lineup as this was her second game back of the season after sitting out the first seven matches due to injury.
The four goals were most for the Rams in a game this season; the last time they scored four was in a tie with San Jose on Oct. 8 of last season.
The Rams will return to Colorado Springs for their next conference opponent, Colorado College (5-4-1) on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
