Ronsiek hits the 2,000-point mark in rivalry game victory.
LARAMIE, Wyo. – Colorado State made just enough stops on the defensive end to hold off a comeback effort from Wyoming, earning an important rivalry win, 61-56, on Saturday at Arena-Auditorium.
Â
Holding on to a three-point lead with just a minute left in the game, the Rams (15-6, 6-2 MW) were in need of a bucket after being held scoreless for nearly four minutes. The ball found its way to the hands of Jadyn Fife at the top of the arc, and the Ram shrugged off an 0-of-8 shooting performance to sink the biggest shot of the night for her team. Despite a few missed free-throws down the stretch, the Rams found enough stops on the defensive end to pull out a victory over the Cowgirls (11-9, 5-3 MW).
Â
The Rams were led in scoring by Emma Ronsiek, who poured in 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor. The Mountain West Preseason Co-Player of the Year surpassed a major career milestone during the game as she scored her 2,000th career point with a signature turnaround-jumper in the third quarter.
Â
Joining Emma Ronsiek in double-figures was her sister Hannah (10) and Hannah Simental (15) while freshman guard Brooke Carlson dished out seven of the Rams' 11 assists. Despite 34 points and 15 rebounds from Wyoming's Allyson Fertig, Colorado State held the Cowgirls' guard tandem of Tess Barnes (10.9ppg) and Emily Mellema (10.6ppg) scoreless on the night.
Â
How It Happened
Wyoming made it a point to exploit its size advantage as it went inside early and often, frustrating Colorado State inside on both ends of the floor. However, Emma Ronsiek made her presence felt early on the offensive end of the floor, scoring eight points to help CSU build an 18-16 lead after the first quarter.
Â
The Rams settled into the game in the second quarter, shooting 50-percent from the floor in the period. Defense came alive to grab four steals – which led to six points on the offensive end – and hold the Cowgirls scoreless across the final 4:45 of the half, providing the foundation for CSU to take a seven-point advantage into the halftime break. Emma Ronsiek and Simental were the catalysts for the Green and Gold offensively, scoring 24 of the Rams' 34 first-half points.
Â
Wyoming came out of the half with a renewed commitment to get Fertig the ball, which proved effective as she scored nine of Wyoming's 16 points in the third quarter. The Rams, meanwhile, stalled offensively and made just four of its 17 attempts from the field (23.5%). Despite scoring just five points across the last five minutes of the quarter, CSU managed to maintain a five-point lead entering the final 10 minutes.
Â
Colorado State continued to endure heavy doses of Fertig as the Wyoming big scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter for her team. After finding a decent offensive rhythm, CSU's shooting went cold with just under five minutes to play, and they failed to score for nearly four minutes. Holding onto a three-point lead with a minute remaining, the Rams got the ball to Fife at the top of the key and the redshirt-sophomore hit the clutch three to put the pressure on Wyoming.
Â
A few missed free throws allowed the Cowgirls to stick around as they brought the lead down to three once again with 20 seconds to play. An inbound foul put Carlson to the line, and she put aside her freshman nerves to sink both of her shots and ultimately clinch the game.

Up Next
Colorado State's next matchup will be a home contest against Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 1. The game will be CSU's Fight Like A Ram game in which the Rams team up with partner UCHealth to honor cancer warriors from the local area.
