Colorado State prepares to scope out regional competition in back-to-back tournaments

FORT COLLINS -- Colorado State women's tennis will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., this week to compete in the Mountain West Fall Individuals. The three-day tournament begins Thursday, October 2, and runs through Monday at the Darling Tennis Center.

Each team will send three individuals to compete in singles play, with two of those athletes also pairing up in doubles. Representing the Rams are Sorcha Caves, Luana Avelar, and Stella Simpson-Morgan. Caves and Avelar will team up in doubles competition while also competing in singles.

The tournament provides an early season opportunity for players to test themselves against some of the strongest competition they will face later in the dual season. First-round doubles matches are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Thursday, followed by singles play at 4 p.m. as courts open. Live scoring is available for all matches.

Caves and Avelar will open against Nevada's Silvia-Maria Costache and Marlene Foerster, with the winning pair advancing to the quarterfinals. Simpson-Morgan, the youngest Ram in the field, will compete in singles against Isabella Crossman of Grand Canyon, gaining valuable experience and an early look at her future competition.

The Rams look to build momentum in Las Vegas before continuing their fall schedule at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, which start just after the Individuals. This tournament – which runs Oct. 7-11 in Provo, Utah, is an annual date on the schedule with the entire team taking part against regional foes.

Both tournaments are qualifiers for future fall events. Winners at the Individuals qualify for the IA Conference Masters Championships, held Nov. 6-9 in San Diego, Calif. The top two finishers in singles at the ITA Regionals, as well as the doubles champion, advance to the ITA Singles and Doubles Championships.
