Team turns attention to Mountain West Tournament
LARAMIE, Wyo. – With the regular season coming to a conclusion on Sunday, the focus turns to a bit of rest and adding some polish before the Mountain West Tournament.
Â
Colorado State's women's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 4-1 loss to rival Wyoming on Sunday, once again starting the day a bit behind the eight ball with forfeits coming at the final doubles and singles slots. The Rams finished 4-17 on the dual season, 2-8 in Mountain West play.
Â
The team will open the conference tournament on April 23 in Las Vegas, playing at 10 a.m., against an opponent still to be determined.
Â
"We are a damn good team and we've got to own that. We are excited for who we will play in the tournament," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Tourney time is exciting, and our focus will be to rest, recover and prepare for our next opponent. We know we are capable of beating any team in the Mountain West, and the time is now."
Â
For the second time this weekend, CSU's top doubles tandem of Sarah Weekley and Victoria Erechtchenko stood on the brink of victory when the opposition claimed the doubles point. The Rams picked up a win at the No. 3 spot in singles when Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya beat Eugenia Ceinos 6-4, 6-3.
Â
The Cowgirls clinched the team win with wins at Nos. 1 and 4 singles, with Erechtchenko tied with Wyoming's Violetta Borodina at 4-all in the third set of their No. 3 singles match.
