Strong run in singles closes out Utah State
LOGAN, Utah – Small victories add up.Â
Â
Tennis is a sport made of small victories, and over the course of a long spring season for the Colorado State women's tennis team, all of them led to a big one on the road as the Rams beat Utah State 4-1 to secure their second Mountain West win this season.Â
"This win definitely builds up our confidence. Every team in this conference is good, so getting another conference win is big," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Right now, our focus has been executing key points in some of our close matches. They've done a good job of cleaning up errors and trusting their games."
Doubles partners Victoria Erechtchenko and Sarah Weekley won their fifth match of the season 6-4 after going back and forth with Olivia Halvorsen and Niyati Kukreti for the first eight games. Helping secure the double's point for Colorado State, Logan Voeks and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya won their match at No. 2, 6-1. Â
Â
Building off her doubles victory, Weekley (No. 1) finished her singles match in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-0 against the Aggies No. 1 Indya Nespor. Erechtchenko (No. 4) added a singles point to the scoreboard with her 7-5, 6-4 win and Diano Lizarazo (No. 5) came back after losing the first set to win the match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Â Twos were wild for the Rams as the victories were the second of the conference slate for Weekley, Erechtchenko, Lizarazo and the No. 2 double tandem.
Â
The rest of the singles matches were unfinished (both in the third set), and Utah State's singles point came from the No. 6 spot which it won by default. Â
"Our team is excited about our final two conference matches against rivals, and it will ultimately prepare us for the tournament," Tran said.
With this win, the Rams are 2-6 in the conference and 4-15 for the dual season. Up next is the final home match of the season for the Rams, celebrating Senior Day against Air Force on April 11 (3:30 p.m.). Â
