New and returning Rams show potential in the early season

Team wraps up second weekend of fall
AIR FORCE ACADEMY - The third and final day of the Bedford Cup Tournament came to an end with Colorado State's women's tennis team walking away with a handful of wins in both singles and doubles and highlights from many of the team's newest athletes.

Senior- freshman duo Hanna Haber and Leyla Tozin beat Colorado's Pia Rebec-Heidi Crncan 6-4 in their doubles match. In singles, Haber pulled off another win against Yufei Cai of Denver, 6-4, 6-2.

"Hanna and Leyla have been able to get to know each other quickly, so it showed on the court," coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "They had great energy and that was a big factor for their doubles this weekend."

More wins came from Annika Planinsek who won both her singles and doubles matches. As a junior transfer from Ball State, Planinsek is already seeing success as a Ram. Working with teammate Diana Lizarazo, they took down the New Mexico tandem of Yu Yun Tsai-Sarah L'allier 6-4. Additional wins came from Lizarazo, Sorcha Caves and Anni Amalnathan.

The Bedford Cup offered the Rams valuable early season competition, pitting them against a wide range of regional and non- conference opponents as the team continues to find a rhythm and build confidence.

"The most rewarding part to this weekend was their great attitudes, team-first mindsets and how coachable they were," Tran said. "I am pleased with where we are starting and excited to get to work in practice and improve. This is a special group."

The team will have a week away from competition, returning to the court for the Mountain West Individuals on Oct. 3-6 in Las Vegas.Â
