Kramer makes defensive play to seal road win in her hometown
USAFA, Colo. — Air Force had one last gasp to take down Colorado State on Wednesday night, but Colorado Springs native Caitlin Kramer made the game-winning defensive play to seal a 65-63 road victory in Clune Arena.
Â
After a late turnover by the Rams (14-4, 5-2 MW), the Falcons (8-9, 2-5 MW) had a side out of bounds with under a second remaining and a chance to tie or win the game. The 6-foot-3 Kramer checked into the game for the first time all night, with the sole purpose of making things difficult for the inbounder. The hometown hero delivered in the final moments, tipping the ball away and locking up a CSU win.
Â
The Rams had their chances to seize control of the game up at the start of the second and third quarters, scoring 11 of the first 13 points in the second frame and producing a 7-0 run just after halftime. However, Milahnie Perry and the Falcons had an answer to every Ram run, keeping within an arms reach the whole way.
Â
Colorado State knew the challenge coming into the night was to limit Perry, who has been one of the top scorers in the Mountain West this season (16.4 ppg). The senior asserted herself early, scoring each of her team's first 13 points of the game and finishing with 31 on the night. Keelie O'Hollaren delivered in Air Force's late charge, scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter to keep her team in it.
Â
With a three-point lead late in the fourth quarter, CSU turned to Lexus Bargesser in the final minute. The senior guard nailed a turnaround layup in the paint to build a five-point advantage and made four clutch free throws to preserve the Rams' lead as the Falcons answered time after time.
Â
Bargesser finished the night with a team-high 19 points – including an 8-for-10 performance from the free throw line – and led a trio of double-digit scorers that included Kloe Froebe (17 points) and Madelyn Bragg (12 points).
Â
How It Happened
The game tipped off with Perry sinking a three-pointer at 9:13, giving the Falcons an early edge. The Rams quickly countered with Froebe's three-pointer at 8:16, leveling the score at 4-4. The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with Perry shining for Air Force with her scoring prowess, while Brooke Carlson kept the Rams in the mix with her contributions. The quarter ended locked at 15-15, punctuated by Emily Adams' free throws for the Falcons in the final minute.
Â
The second quarter saw the Rams finding their rhythm. Bragg started with a layup at 9:05, and Froebe added a jumper to make it 19-15. Bargesser's three-pointer at 6:45, thanks to an assist from Froebe, helped widen the gap to 22-17. Despite a late surge from Air Force, highlighted Adams'scoring streak, the Rams held their ground and led 31-28 at halftime.
Â
In the third quarter, the Rams tightened their defense, notching three blocks and three steals. Bragg got things rolling with a layup at 9:05, followed by a crucial block and rebound. Bargesser hit a jumper at 6:28, and Froebe's layup and free throw at 5:24 pushed the Rams to a 38-28 advantage. O'Hollaren kept Air Force in the hunt with a jumper and a three-pointer, but the Rams stayed strong, ending the quarter up 43-38.
Â
As the final quarter unfolded, the Rams clung to a slim lead, ultimately securing the 65-63 win. Carlson kicked off the quarter with a three-pointer at 8:58, assisted by Froebe, stretching the lead to eight. Perry kept Air Force fighting with a crucial three-pointer at 6:58. Even with Air Force's late efforts, Bargesser's free throws at the 29-second mark put the Rams up by six. Alexis Cortez's last-second three-pointer cut the deficit to two, and Bargesser's turnover game the Falcons one final chance. However, Kramer's heroics on the defensive end closed out the road win for CSU.
