CSU Leans on Perspective in Win Against SJSU

1/17/2026 3:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball

The Rams delivered a needed reset on Saturday against Spartans

When a game means something more than just basketball, it can be difficult to not let it infiltrate the headspace.

But in a way, it can be an advantage.

For Colorado State's eighth conference game of the season against San Jose State, the annual Fight Like a Ram celebration was in full effect. Ending 75-60, the stat line at the end was indicative of the team the Rams have evolved into from past weeks.

44 rebounds when they average 36, 16-of-17 free throws made and a season best performance from one of the most consistent players on the court: Kloe Froebe.

"Kloe is our most steady player" Coach Ryun Williams said. "You don't ever see her change emotion or expression. Nothing can faze her. No circumstance, not a bad call, not missed shots. You know, that's impressive. And so she's becoming the kid that we really trust. She's a leader out there. And, usually, we think good things are going to happen when she's on the floor and she sees it right. She makes people around her better."

She remedied a slow start in the half. Though it ended 38-32 in the Rams' favor adjustments needed to be made from an offensive perspective, especially as turnovers kept interrupting their rhythm ending the day with 16.

Adjusting to the zone defense of the Spartans was a challenge but nothing they hadn't prepared for. It comes down to not getting intimidated in the face of a challenge.

"I think it was just going at it and being not afraid of them being in the paint or anything," said Lexus Bargesser who put up 22 points. "It was also trying to slow ourselves down and make the right read."

The right read in the second half seemed to be getting the ball to Froebe who scored 15 of her 18 in the second half alone.

A 3 there and a layup there all added up to her first double-double of the season.

"Yeah, I think that we talked at halftime and we were like, we can't let this one go, we've got to give it our all," Froebe said. "So I wanted to do whatever I could to help the team out."

And the team on Saturday was more than just the 10 which made their way to the floor but the cancer warriors whose names were written on the back of their jersey's.

It served as a reminder to those who had been there—whether it be for one year or 14—that the heart of the program extends far beyond the court. Games like this pull the focus back to the community that surrounds the team, the people who show up, fight their own private battles and still choose to be there. That kind of perspective doesn't just sit in the background; it shapes how a team carries itself.

That sense of something bigger was woven into every part of Saturday.

"First of all, it's not about us," Williams said. "We talk all the time in our program and our culture that it's so much more than just us… And the pride in playing for Colorado State, the pride in playing for the community and the name on the back of that jersey. We're worried about rebounding and turning the ball over. Some people have a little different worries and a little different fight."

But perspective isn't always easy to swallow in the middle of a grinding conference schedule. When every game feels urgent and every possession magnified, taking a step back can feel like a luxury. Still, the Fight Like a Ram tribute forced that pause, pulling the players' attention upward and outward.

And the players felt that shift just as much as the fans. What was meant to honor the Cancer Warriors ended up giving something back to the team too—a reminder of joy, resilience and gratitude that can get lost in the noise of competition.

"I don't think they realize the effect it has on us," Bargesser said. "I think that everyone looks at it and is like hoping that we're just influencing them. But they have a huge effect on us… their positivity and their joy just radiate… It made us realize that life is more than basketball. So going out there and being able to play for them was a great opportunity."

For CSU, the win was more than a feel‑good moment but one it genuinely needed. After an uneven stretch of conference play, Saturday offered a reset the Rams had been searching for. The performance wasn't perfect, but it was enough to reestablish some rhythm and confidence heading into the heart of the schedule.

And on a night built around perspective, the result on the scoreboard fit the theme: a reminder that when a game means something more than basketball, it can steady a team in ways that show up long after the final buzzer.
