Ronsiek Resets in Rams’ Victory

1/21/2026 9:40:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Senior has double-double in team’s third consecutive win

Every member of the team has a role to fill.

When it comes to basketball, shooters are supposed to shoot. It will lead to hot streaks. It will also lead to slumps. Hannah Ronsiek knows that's her role, particularly from deep. The true senior has been counted on to be a sniper since her freshman season, and she's been pretty apt at her job, entering the season ranked among Colorado State's all-time leaders in 3-point percentage.

The thing is shooters are also human. They react to the hot streaks and try to extend them, but they feel the slumps even deeper. Experience and past performance would suggest a veteran can let it go, understand, but if the slump extends – as it has recently for Ronsiek – the doubts can linger. The shooter can become an overthinker.

"I definitely was not an experienced player during that little slump," Ronsiek said. "I get very in my head. It was hard to get out, but luckily this game was hopefully my turning point for the season."

The Rams won the tip Wednesday night at Moby Arena facing Grand Canyon, and purposely, Colorado State coach Ryun Williams ran an action to get her open. It worked perfectly, freeing Ronsiek up at the top of the key.

Catch. Set. Fire.

Good. And the team was the rest of the way, leading to a third consecutive Mountain West victory with a 67-50 decision.

Ronsiek entered the night mired in the worst slump of her career, having missed 12 consecutive 3s. But in that opening moment, she was confident, then reassured. She led the team in scoring with 14 points, leading her to the fourth double-double of her career as she collected 11 rebounds. Along the way, she hit 3-of-7 from deep, 5-of-11 overall.

"I really can't even describe how good that was," Ronsiek said. "But yeah, obviously I've struggled the last couple of games, and it really is just kind of a mentality; you're going to go in slumps, and you've got to go with the saying, shooters shoot. So I knew the only way to get out of it was to shoot my way out of it."

Truth is, it hasn't been solely a Ronsiek problem. The team was shooting just 31.8 percent behind the arc when the game started, the worst mark for the program since 2019-20 (31.3). Truth is, Ronsiek was just feeling more of the pressure as the only returning established gunner.

Sophomores Kloe Froebe and Brooke Carlson have improved, but they aren't necessarily looking for the shot. McKenna Murphy, a redshirt freshman, has the skillset, but off the bench. After starting the season hot, she too had cooled off. Lexus Bargesser has been heating up lately.

Williams knows it's a big part of the game for his team, a definite area where the Rams have to show improvement. Wednesday's team-wide 8-of-17 performance was a glimmer of hope.

"Totally. And our most consistent shooter, like Kloe, has been really consistent; Brooke. Those are the two kids that you can count on," Williams said. "They're going to knock down a couple each game. They're the reliable ones right now. But, you know, Bargesser saw a couple go down tonight. If we can just be a threat from that 3-ball at a little better pace we've been here so far this season, that's how this basketball team can grow.

"But too many turnovers in the second half. And Grand Canyon was really active on the ball. Defensively, we challenged them to get better. We challenged them to value the ball better. We're still not there yet. Too many loose decisions with the ball."

The Rams had 14 miscues in all, a high number for them, but some of it came on offensive fouls, where the team was being aggressive going to the basket or fighting underneath. Those types Williams can live with, and it did show him his team is still going to be aggressive on that end of the floor despite scoring less than they did at the start of the season.

As for Froebe, her stat line was pretty similar to most nights. She finished with 11 points, pulled down four rebounds and led the team with four assists, all while playing gritty defense.

"I'm just trying to do whatever I can to help my teammates and help us ultimately get the end victory," she said. "And so whatever that is that I need to do, I'm going to try and do it to the best."

For her, and the team, it started with setting a defensive tone. CSU has tended to start slow and play from behind, but the way it stayed connected on the defensive end allowed the squad to build a 14-point advantage at half, one it extended to 26 early in the fourth.

The Rams had a plan, one which limited GCU's leading scorer, Chloe Mann, to just eight points and just three in the first half.

"We've talked a lot about coming out stronger because, like you said, we've kind of started the games a little slower in the past," Froebe said. "And so that was something that we've been working on in practice. And just together, we've been talking about just coming out stronger than we have."

Oddly enough, the Rams had built that lead with their leading scorer, Bargesser, yet to tally. She didn't in the first 23 minutes of the game but came on strong at the end to score 13. Maddie Bragg added nine, as did Marta Leimane, and Carlson chipped in eight despite foul trouble.

It proved to be a good night for the Rams to build up some good vibes. The next five games include two with conference-leading San Diego State, a road test at perennial front-runner UNLV and a visit from rival Wyoming.

The team did feel good leaving the floor, but no one more so than Ronsiek -- and her teammates felt good for her. She was feeling it, that much they knew.

"I know Hannah. I see her practice," Froebe said. "I see her putting in the extra work. She's a great shooter, and so I knew eventually she'd knock him down. And once she did, I was like we just need to feed her the ball and just let her keep shooting."

Because that's what shooters do.
