Colorado State wrap up USD/UCSD Invite

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Colorado State fell to UC San Diego at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex on Sunday. Colorado State's offense was highlighted by a three-run fifth inning, but UC San Diego managed to secure the win with a three-run fifth of its own.

Colorado State, 4 | UC San Diego, 5
  • Colorado State faced off against UC San Diego in a tightly contested matchup. The game began with both teams held scoreless through the first inning. UC San Diego took the lead in the second inning, scoring two runs. However, CSU responded in the third inning when Kaylynn English's advancement on a sacrifice bunt was capitalized on by Jailey Wilson's RBI groundout, narrowing the score to UC San Diego 2, Colorado State 1 after the third.
  • The pivotal moment came in the fifth inning for CSU. Autumn Rutherford started with a single, and after a walk to Lauren Stucky, Wilson delivered a crucial three-run home run to deep left field, propelling the Rams into the lead. This offensive surge brought the score to CSU 4, UC San Diego 2 after the fifth.
  • UC San Diego regained momentum in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer by Maalia Cherry, putting them back in front. Despite a valiant effort by CSU, including a single by Wilson in the seventh inning, they could not overcome UC San Diego's lead.
  • Reagan Wick pitched a complete game for CSU, throwing six innings and recording four strikeouts. Wick allowed eight hits and five runs, with four of those runs earned, while issuing two walks. Despite giving up a home run, Wick managed to induce eight groundouts and five flyouts over 97 pitches, 64 of which were strikes. The junior pitcher faced 28 batters and concluded the game with a 2-2 record on the season.
  • Wilson drove in four runs and hit a home run, contributing significantly to the team's offense. Madi Eslinger, in a pinch-hit appearance, recorded a hit, advancing two runners. Allyson Moody added a double and reached base with a walk, providing a consistent presence at the plate.
Up Next: The Rams are set to travel to Texas for the River State Classic on February 20-22 for their third week on the road before returning to Ram Field the following week.
