Colorado State defeated Northern Colorado and Creighton in Ram Field debut

FORT COLLINS - The Colorado State softball team sweep opening day of the Colorado Classic, defeating both Northern Colorado and Creighton during its home opener. The Rams secured a 5-1 victory over Northern Colorado highlighted by a four-run sixth inning before going on to secure a 6-2 victory over Creighton, driven by a decisive five-run third inning.  
Game One: Colorado State, 5 | Northern Colorado, 1  
  • Colorado State hosted its Colorado Classic co-host, Northern Colorado for its home opener Saturday afternoon. The visiting team took an early lead in the third inning with a solo home run, but the Rams responded with five unanswered runs.
  • In the fourth inning, the Rams leveled the score. Allyson Moody reached on an error by the right fielder, and pinch runner Lindsey Hinson later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kaylynn English, tying the game at 1-1 after four innings. 
  • The game remained tight until the sixth inning, where the Rams seized control. Bradie Poteet-Herrera reached on a throwing error, allowing Nadia DeZeeuw and English to score unearned runs. Kyra Smith then doubled down the left field line, driving in two more runs, putting Colorado State ahead 5-1 after six innings. 
  • Reagan Wick delivered a complete game performance for CSU, pitching seven innings while allowing only seven hits and one earned run. Wick recorded three strikeouts against Northern Colorado, issuing two walks over 111 pitches. Wick now has a 5-5 record on the season. 
  • Kyra Smith led the Rams offensively with a crucial two-RBI double, contributing significantly to her team's scoring efforts. Lauren Stucky added a double and a run scored while Jailey Wilson reached base four times, collecting two hits and drawing two walks to help sustain the team's offensive momentum.   
Game Two: Colorado State, 6 | Creighton, 2  
  • After two scoreless innings, the third frame was pivotal for the Rams with Lauren Stucky drawing a walk and Kyra Smith advancing her to second. Bradie Poteet-Herrera then delivered an RBI single, bringing Stucky home to score. Clarissa Castillo followed with another RBI single, scoring Smith. Madi Eslinger kept the momentum going with an RBI single down the right field line while Autumn Rutherford capped the inning with a two-RBI single to center to give the Rams a 5-0 lead before the inning was over.
  • Creighton responded in the top half of the fourth, but another hit by Kyra Smith via an RBI double, extended the lead after Jailey Wilson walked and scored from first base. 
  • The Blue Jays added a one more run in the fifth inning, but they could not close the gap further. The remaining innings were scoreless for both teams, concluding the game with a final score of 6-2 in favor of the Rams. 
  • Giselle Bentley pitched a complete game for Colorado State, going seven innings while allowing seven hits and two earned runs. She faced 28 batters, recording one strikeout and issuing only one walk. Bentley maintained control throughout the game, delivering 78 pitches with 50 of them being strikes. 
  • Madi Eslinger recorded two hits and one RBI in her three plate appearances, contributing significantly to the team's offensive effort. Kyra Smith hit a double and drove in one run, showcasing her effectiveness at the plate. Autumn Rutherford collected two hits and two RBI during her three plate appearances.
Up Next:  The Rams will compete in day two of the Colorado Classic on Sunday at Ram Field, with games at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. against Creighton and Northern Colorado, respectively.
