Fort Collins, Colo. - The Colorado State softball team split with the conference leading San Diego State Aztecs in two very close games Friday afternoon at Ram Field. The Rams beat the Aztecs 1-0 in game one, but dropped the second game by a score of 2-1 after a seventh inning comeback was cut short.
Sophomore Steph Roberts continued her hot hitting in game one, recording two of the Rams? three hits and scoring the only run of the game off of a sacrifice fly recorded by junior Ricki Walker.
Junior pitcher Megan Masser threw her second straight shutout, holding the Aztecs to only three hits and striking out two batters. After coming on in relief in the second game, Masser has now pitched 26 consecutive shutout innings. Masser?s record now stands at 16-5 (6-3 MWC) and her ERA is down to 1.57.
With the win, the Rams became the only conference opponent to be San Diego State pitcher Celena Velasquez.
In game two, the Rams were held to one run on five hits. Sophomore Kerry Farrell finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI in the game, scoring freshman Katie Dean in the bottom of the third inning. Roberts? nine-game hitting streak was snapped in game two as she finished 0-for-3.
Freshman Genevieve Kelly picked up the loss. She pitched 3.1 innings allowing only two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking three batters. Her record dropped to 9-4 on the season.
Colorado State will close out the regular season on Sunday when they take on UNLV at 12:00 noon at Ram Field. With a pair of victories on Sunday, the Rams will clinch the second-seed at the Mountain West Championship. A short ceremony will be held before the game to honor this year?s seniors.
